Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair




1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove cam cover and EGR pipe clamp bolt from rear of cylinder head.
3. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
4. Lower vehicle and drain cooling system.
5. Disconnect heater hoses from intake manifold and from rear of cylinder head.
6. Disconnect accelerator linkage, fuel lines, electrical wiring and vacuum hoses from engine.
7. Rotate crankshaft until number 4 cylinder is in firing position. Remove distributor cap and mark rotor to housing relationship.

8. Lock timing chain adjuster by depressing and rotating automatic adjuster slide pin 90 degrees clockwise Fig. 2.
9. On 1983-87 models, remove camshaft sprocket and fuel pump drive cam to camshaft bolt. On all models, do not remove the sprocket from chain.
10. Disconnect AIR hose and check valve from exhaust manifold.
11. Remove cylinder head to timing cover attaching bolts, then cylinder head bolts.
12. Remove cylinder head, intake and exhaust manifold as an assembly from engine.

13. Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head bolts in sequence, Fig. 3. Refer to Engine / Cylinder Head Assembly / Specifications / Mechanical,for torque valves.
