Isuzu has redesigned the tailgate opener cable. The new cable will offer a significant reduction in the force necessary to open the tailgate.

As shown in the first illustration below, the previous design utilizes a steel sheath. Contained inside is the moveable cable onto which antifriction material has been wrapped.

The new design, shown in the second illustration, incorporates a steel sheath with a teflon (anti-friction) coating bonded to the inside. The actuating cable glides inside this new housing.

SERVICE PROCEDURE



After installing the redesigned cable, if the release lever effort is still excessive, it may be necessary to readjust the tail gate striker by the use of shims. When installing the shim or shims, be sure no leaks develop around the tail gate.

To adjust the striker plate, remove the plate, add (or delete) shims, then reinstall striker using the original hardware.

The following illustration indicates the location of the striker shims.
