Fig. 4 Exploded view of disc brake caliper:
Disassembly
1. Remove slide pin boot and lock pin boot, Fig. 4, from caliper.
2. Remove bleeder and cap from caliper.
3. Remove boot ring using a small screw driver.
4. Remove piston boot from caliper.
5. Position a block of wood in front of the piston, then force out the piston blowing compressed air into flexible hose attachment. Do not place fingers in front of piston when using compressed air.
6. Using a screwdriver, remove piston seal.
Inspection
1. Check rotor, caliper body and support bracket for distortion or cracking and replace, if necessary.
2. Inspect cylinder bores and piston for wear, scuffing or corrosion and replace, if necessary.
3. Inspect slide pin, piston seal and piston boot for wear, bending, distortion, cracks corrosion or other conditions and replace, if necessary.
Assembly
1. Apply rubber grease to the cylinder wall and piston seal, then insert the piston seal into the cylinder bore.
2. Insert piston into cylinder bore, using finger pressure only.
3. Apply grease to boot fitting face of piston.
4. Apply grease to piston boot, then install piston boot to cylinder.
5. Install boot ring into cylinder.
6. Attach the slide pin boot to the caliper after filling boot with grease and applying grease to the lock pin hole in caliper.
7. Apply grease to inner face of the lock pin boot before attaching it to caliper.
8. Install bleeder with cap. Torque bleeder to 5.8 ft. lbs.
