Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Disconnect exhaust pipe bracket from block.
4. Disconnect heater hoses from engine side only.
5. Unplug 02 sensor from harness.
6. Remove thermostat housing from cylinder head.
7. Disconnect accelerator linkage, fuel lines, electrical wiring and vacuum hoses from engine.
8. Disconnect electrical connector from vacuum switching valve.
9. Remove power steering belt.
10. With engine supported, remove mount and bracket from front of engine.
11. Remove remaining belts.
12. Remove front timing belt cover.
13. Rotate crankshaft until number 4 cylinder is in firing position. Align crankshaft timing pulley and camshaft timing pulley.
14. Remove timing belt. Refer to TIMING BELT REPLACE for removal procedures.
15. Remove distributor cap and mark rotor to housing relationship.
16. Remove spark plug wires from plugs and remove distributor.
17. Remove power steering pump and alternator bracket.
18. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds.
Head Bolt Removal Sequence:
19. Remove rocker cover assembly, and cylinder head bolts in sequence shown.
20. Remove cylinder head from engine.
INSTALLATION
Head Bolt Installation Sequence:
1. Clean and check block surface.
2. Install new head gasket.
3. Lubricate head bolt threads with light oil.
4. Torque cylinder head bolts in sequence, Refer to engine tightening specifications for torque valves. Reverse disassembly procedure to reinstall components.
