SERVICE INFORMATION

American Isuzu Motors Inc. has been advised by the California Air Resources Board that dealers should establish tighter controls of sales of California emission control (tune-up) labels (Figure 1), to prevent the misuse of these labels. The misuse of labels involves affixing labels next to and/or over the original Federal emission label on imported vehicles not certified to California specifications prior to the sale of the vehicles.

To prevent fraudulent entry of vehicles not certified to California specifications, sales of official tuneup labels should be controlled by the dealers. Dealers should make sure that the labels sold as spare parts will be used only for vehicles that may legally display the label, and that the labels will not be fraudulently used.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) suggests possible controls dealers may use to ensure legal use of emission (tune-up) labels. American Isuzu Motors Inc. suggests that dealers follow one or more of these control guidelines:

1. Check vehicle identification numbers to see if the vehicle is California certified, Federally certified or neither If necessary, contact your regional office to verify the emission certification status of the vehicle.

2. Inspect the vehicle for assurance that the old emission label requires replacement.

3. Have dealership personnel install the label, so that reusing the label on another vehicle is impossible.
