SERVICE INFORMATION
A running change in front hub nut design was made during 1987 model year production. Refer to Figure 1. Models before the referenced VIN use a split pin
(cotter pin) to secure the front hub nut. Models after the referenced VIN have a flange nut that is staked after being torqued.
CAUTION
Some non-Turbo models built in 03/87 have the new axle on the left-hand side and the old axle on the righthand side. Be sure to install the correct type nut on each axle.
This bulletin contains the installation procedure for the new front hub nut. In addition, the front axle shaft part number have changed as shown under "PARTS INFORMATION." The new flange nut must only be used with the new type axles.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Apply multi-purpose grease to:
a. The threaded portion of the front axle shaft.
b. The inner threaded portion and the contact face of the flange nut
c. The inner and outer portion of the hub shown in Figure 2.
2. Thread the flange nut on by hand, then tighten to 130-144 ft.lbs. (18-20 kg-m).

3. Use a dull tool to stake the flange nut into the relief in the axle shaft (Figure 3). The staked portion must be within 1 mm of the bottom of the relief.
4. Check the flange nut for cracks; if any are found, the nut must be removed and a new one installed as described above.
5. Whenever the flange nut is removed for vehicle servicing a new nut must be installed.
