Timing Belt: Adjustments

NOTE: There must be no slack in the belt after it has been installed. The teeth of the belt and the teeth of the pulley must be in perfect alignment.

TIMING BELT ADJUSTMENT
1. Loosen the tension pulley bolt.
2. Insert a hex wrench into the tension pulley hexagonal hole.

Hold the pulley stationary and temporarily tighten the bolt.

3. Turn the crankshaft two complete reverse revolutions and align the crankshaft timing pulley groove with the mark on the oil pump.
4. Loosen the tension pulley bolt and apply tension to the belt.
5. Insert a hex wrench into the tension pulley hexagonal hole.

Hold the pulley stationary and tighten the bolt.
Torque kg-m (ft.lbs.) 5.1 (36.9)

6. Move the crankshaft back to about 500 BTDC. Once again, perform the normal operation. Set the crankshaft at that position.
7. Use drive belt tension gauge to check the timing belt tension.

Belt tension kg(lbs.) 20 ± 2 (44 ± 4.4)
Belt tension gage J-26486-B

8. Check the valve clearance.
^ Measurement should be taken at the clearance between the rocker arm and the valve stem.
^ Turn the crankshaft one full turn and adjust the clearance of the remaining valves.
