4XE1 DOHC Crankshaft Pulley Bolt Torque Formula
Using special tool J-38209 to tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt increases the length of a torque wrench by 3.94 inches. Because the amount of torque applied is a function of the length of the lever when force is constant, the setting on the torque wrench must be changed to take this extra length into account.
The formula to find the corrected torque setting is indicated in figure.
Here is an example of how to solve the equation with some assumed values:
Because most torque wrenches cannot be adjusted to .25 foot pound, setting the torque wrench to 106 ft.lbs. would be acceptable.
This formula will work for any length or desired torque. All that is needed is to change the length and desired torque values to match the specifications.
