Positive Crankcase Ventilation: Testing and Inspection



SYSTEM OPERATIONAL CHECK/PCV VALVE CHECK

Check vacuum hoses for leaks, collapsed or plugged hoses, or improper connections.

1. Start engine and idle.
2. Remove PCV valve from cylinder head cover, with hose attached.
3. Place finger over end of PCV valve, you should feel vacuum and hear or feel the valve click. Also engine rpm may change slightly.
4. If there is no change, or if you do not feel vacuum or hear the valve click, remove valve.
5. Blow air into the valve from the crankcase side. Air should flow through the valve easily.
6. Blow air into the valve from the manifold side. Air flow through valve should be restricted.
7. Check valve for heavy deposits, replace if excessively dirty or plugged.
8. Check PCV hose for heavy deposits, collapsed or plugged hose.


OIL SEPARATOR - TURBO ONLY

1. Check oil separator perforated plates for dirt and contamination. If sludge is excessive, clean with suitable solvent or cleaning solution.
2. Check oil return line, be sure oil can drain back to engine freely.
3. Check hoses for cracks, splits, excessive swelling. Replace as necessary.
