Alternator: Testing and Inspection
LESS DOHC1. Place vehicle in Park or Neutral, then block wheels.
2. Disconnect the wire terminal ``B'' of the alternator, then connect it to the negative lead of the ammeter.
3. Connect the positive lead of the ammeter to terminal ``B'' of the alternator.
4. Turn On high beam headlamps and air conditioning high fan motor control switch.
5. Operate engine at 1900 RPM, read amperage. If amperage is less than 47 amperes on I-Mark models, or 30 amperes on 1989 Impulse & Trooper models, repair or replace alternator as necessary.
WITH DOHC
1. Place vehicle in Park or Neutral, then block wheels.
2. Disconnect the wire terminal ``B'' of the alternator, then connect it to the negative lead of the ammeter.
3. Connect the positive lead of the ammeter to terminal ``B'' of the alternator.
4. Turn On high beam headlamps and air conditioning high fan motor control switch.
5. Operate engine at 2080 RPM, read amperage. If amperage is less than 60 amperes, repair or replace alternator as necessary.
