Removal and Installation

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove hood.
3. Support front of vehicle on jackstands and remove front wheels.
4. Remove tie rod end cotter pins and castle nuts.
5. Using tool J-21687-02 or equivalent, remove tie rod end from knuckle.
6. Using a suitable engine hoist, slightly raise engine, then support lower part of engine with a floor jack.
7. Remove engine mounting bolts.
8. Remove extension pipe rubber hanger retaining nut then lower extension pipe.
9. Remove cross beam, steering gear cover and steering shaft side bolt.
10. Remove intermediate shaft retaining bolt, then the shaft.
11. On vehicles equipped with power steering, remove oil lines. Turn wheel left to right several times to force oil from cylinder.
12. On all models, remove steering unit assembly retaining bolts then the unit.
13. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque feed side oil line to 25 ft. lbs. and return side to 33 ft. lbs.
b. Ensure serrated notches on shafts are aligned properly and torque steering shaft side bolt to 19 ft. lbs.
c. Torque cross beam retaining bolts to 56 ft. lbs.
d. Torque engine mounting bolts to 61 ft. lbs.
e. Torque tie rod end mounting nut to 29 ft. lbs.
f. Torque wheel lug nuts to 87 ft. lbs on aluminum wheels and 65 ft. lbs on steel wheels.
