Oil Pump and/or Oil Seal Replacement On-Car Service

1. Be careful of the following before removing the timing belt. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal. Drain the engine oil from oil pan.

2. Support the engine by using an engine hoist.

v3. Torque Rod Remove the rear side torque rod while the oil pan is jacked up.

v4. Engine Mount

Remove the right side engine mount bolt (A) and engine mount bracket bolt (B). Then remove the body side engine mount cushion and the rear side torque rod.

5. Loosen the air conditioning compressor, adjust plate bolt, then remove the air conditioning compressor drive belt. Loosen the power steering oil pump, adjust plate bolt, then remove the power steering oil pump drive belt. Loosen the alternator, adjust plate bolt, then remove the alternator drive belt.

6. Crank Pulley

Remove the crank pulley bolts (total 4), with the engine slightly lifted.

7. Timing Cover Remove the bolts (total 6) fixing the timing belt cover, then remove the timing belt cover.
8. Make sure that the crankshaft timing mark on the crankshaft pulley hub is aligned with the top dead center.

v9. Crankshaft Bolt Use appropriate tool to hold flywheel and prevent crankshaft from turning. Then remove the bolt on the end part of crankshaft, then remove pulley hub.

10. Confirm the crankshaft is at top dead center, prior to removing the timing belt. In this state, if notch on camshaft pulley hub is aligned with the left upper corner of the cylinder head, the No. 4 cylinder is at Top Dead Center. If the notch on the camshaft pulley hub is aligned with the right upper corner of the cylinder head, the No. 1 cylinder is at Top dead Center.

11. Timing Belt

Loosen the bolts fixing the tension pulley. Turn the tension pulley clockwise with the allen wrench, then remove the timing belt.

12. Crankshaft Timing Pulley Remove the crankshaft timing pulley.
13. Exhaust Pipe

Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the exhaust manifold.

14. Dust Cover Remove the flywheel dust cover.

v15. Oil Pan

Remove the oil pan by using the seal cutter to shear sealant off.

Seal Cutter : J-37228 Note:

The sealant is applied to entire fitting face of oil pan. Do not pry it or you may distort the sealing flange.

16. Oil Pump Assembly Remove the oil pump fixing bolts and the oil pump assembly. Carefully remove the sealing materials from both the oil pump and the cylinder body. Be very careful not to damage the cylinder body or the oil pump.

17. Oil Seal Remove the oil seal with a screwdriver.
v18. Oil Seal v Install the new oil seal. Apply engine oil to the oil seal lip after installation.

Installer : J-35269

19. Oil Pump Assembly Install the oil pump assembly.
Torque kg-m(ft.lbs.)

2.4 (17.4)

v20. Oil Pan
v 1) Completely remove all residual sealant, lubricant and
moisture from the connecting surfaces. The surfaces must be perfectly dry.
2) Apply a correct width bead of sealant (TB-1207C or its equivalent) to the contact surfaces of the oil pan. There must be no gaps in the bead.
3) The oil pan must be installed within 30 minutes after sealant application.
v 4) The engine must not be started within 30 minutes of
installing the oil pan.
5) Tighten the bolts and nuts to the specified torque.

Torque kg-m(ft.lbs.)
1.0 (7.2)

21. Camshaft Timing Pulley Make sure that the camshaft pulley timing mark is aligned with the upper surface of the cylinder head and the dowel pin is in the up position.

vInstall crankshaft timing pulley, making sure that the vwoodruff key is positioned correctly.

v22. Timing Belt

Set the timing belt letter mark in the direction of engine rotation and perform the installation procedure in the following order.

1) Crankshaft timing pulley
2) Camshaft timing pulley
3) Water pump pulley
4) Tension pulley Note:

There must be no slack in the belt after it has been installed. The teeth of the belt and the teeth of the pulley must be in perfect alignment.

v23. Timing Belt Adjustment

1) Loosen the tension pulley bolt.
2) Insert allen wrench into the tension pulley hexagonal hole. Hold the pulley stationary and temporarily tighten the bolt.

v 3) Turn the crankshaft two complete reverse revolu-
tions and align the crankshaft timing pulley groove
with the mark on the oil pump.
v 4) Loosen the tension pulley bolt and apply tension to
the belt.
5) Insert allen wrench into the tension pulley hexagonal hole. Hold the pulley stationary and tighten the bolt.
Torque kg-m(ft.lbs.)
5.1 (36.9)

v 6) Move the crankshaft back to about 50~BTDC.
Once again, perform Steps 4 & 5.

7) Use drive belt tension gauge to check the timing belt tension.

Belt Tension kg(lbs.)
20 +/- 2 (44 +/- 4.4)

Belt Tension Gage: J-26486-B
v24. Crankshaft Pulley Hub

v ^ Attach the taper face to the belt.
^ Use appropriate tool to hold flywheel and prevent crankshaft from turning. Then fasten the center bolt according to the prescribed torque.

Torque kg-m(ft.lbs.)
15.0 +/- 1.5 (108 +/- 10.9)

v25. Timing Belt Cover

Tighten the bolts (total 6) to specification, while paying attention to the bolt length.
Torque kg-m(ft.lbs.)
1.0 (7.2)

v26. Crank Pulley Fasten the pulley to pulley hub, using four bolts.
Torque kg-m(ft.lbs.)
0.5 - 1.0 (4 - 7)

v27. Alternator, Power Steering Pump Adjust the V-belt and A/C compressor belt tension:
Belt Tension kg(lbs.)
41 +/- 10 (90 +/- 20)

Using a Borroughs drive belt tension gauge.

v28. Engine Mount Bracket

Attach the engine mount cushion to the body, then lower the engine hoist gradually, thus elevating the engine mount cushion. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

Torque kg-m(ft.lbs.)

Body side 4.1 (29.7)

Engine side 6.2 (44.8)

v29. Torque Rod Tighten the bolt to specification.
