1989 I-MARK (JT) EMISSIONS CAMPAIGN

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

Number 93E-891 has been assigned to this campaign. This number will appear on all communications and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1989 I-Mark (JT) Federal carbureted non-turbocharged models.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Affected vehicles are out of compliance with Federal emission standards. As a result, they may not meet emission certification requirements and may fail state mandated emissions tests.

To correct this condition, on vehicles equipped with manual transmission, the Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM computer chip) in the ECM must be replaced. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, a spark delay valve must be replaced. Use only parts listed in the "Parts Information" section of this Campaign Bulletin.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

All owners of affected vehicles will be notified by letter (copy enclosed) from American ISUZU Motors Inc. Each ISUZU dealer (except California) will be supplied a copy of the AIMI Campaign Report (AWS 123-1A) listing affected vehicles assigned to that dealership. If none of the affected vehicles are assigned to your dealership, no Report will be sent. Dealers are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. The Report contains VIN and detailed owner information obtained from state motor vehicle registration records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states.

PARTS INFORMATION

The parts have been shipped automatically to each dealership, except California dealers. The quantity of parts shipped is dependent upon the dealer's sales volume of affected vehicles.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Manual transmission models only: Replace the PROM as follows:

a. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

b. Remove the driver's side kick panel.

c. Remove the ECM and note its part number or service number. (Figure 1 shows ECM service number location.)

^ If ECM is p/n 8-16066-399-0 or service number 1228061, install PROM p/n 8-16190-397-0.

^ If ECM is p/n 8-16126-159-0 or service number 16126208, install PROM p/n 8-16195-253-0.

d. Following the instructions packed with the new PROM, remove the old PROM from the ECM and install the new PROM in its place.

e. Reinstall and connect the ECM. Reinstall kick panel.

f. Reconnect the battery.

g. Start the engine and note the "CHECK ENGINE" light. If it flashes Code 51, this indicates that the incorrect PROM has been installed. Repeat step c. above to verify the correct new PROM p/n. Then repeat steps d. through g. for PROM installation.

2. Automatic transmission models only: Refer to "Parts Information" section of this Campaign Bulletin for spark delay valve part number. Replace the spark delay valve (Figure 2) between the air induction valve and vacuum switching valve, with the red plastic end facing toward the vacuum switching valve.

3. All affected vehicles: Affix a campaign label to the inside of the driver's door. Using a ball-point pen, fill in label with campaign number 93E-891 and your ISUZU dealer code.

DEALER RESPONSIBILITY

ISUZU dealers are responsible for repairing any affected vehicle at no charge to owners, regardless of date of purchase, mileage or selling dealer. Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is in a dealer's vehicle inventory, or arrives at a dealership for service, the dealer must take the necessary steps to ensure this campaign correction his been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

FLAT RATE MANUAL UPDATE INFORMATION

Use Trouble Code 07 for all campaign operations.

1989 ISUZU I-MARK EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN

Dear ISUZU I-Mark Owner:

The Environmental Protection Agency and ISUZU exhaust emission testing have determined that some 1989 I-Mark vehicles may exceed the Federal carbon monoxide emission standard.

WHAT IS THE RECALL FOR?

The amount of carbon monoxide emission will be reduced by a modification to the emission control system. If your vehicle is equipped with manual transmission, a PROM (computer memory chip) will be replaced in the electronic control module (ECM). If your vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission, a spark delay valve will be replaced.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Please make an appointment with your authorized ISUZU Dealer, who will make the emission system modification at no charge. The labor time necessary to perform this service correction is approximately one hour. Please ask your ISUZU Dealer if you wish to know how much additional time will be needed to schedule and process your vehicle. Please refer to Campaign Bulletin SB93-03-005 when you contact your Dealer.

In order to ensure your full protection under the emission warranty made applicable to your vehicle by Federal law, and your right to participate in future recalls, it is recommended that you have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could legally be determined to be a lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle, or could cause your vehicle to fail an emissions test required by State or local law. ISUZU will repair all vehicles, regardless of maintenance or use, except those that have emission control sub-systems modified or disabled. In those cases, an owner will be asked if the system should be restored at their expense.

If the Dealer does not schedule a service date within a reasonable time, you may contact the appropriate ISUZU Regional Office listed in the back of your Owner's Manual, or the National Customer Relations Office, American ISUZU Motors Inc., P.O. Box 2480, City of Industry, CA 91746 (800-255-6727).

If your ISUZU Dealer and the Customer Relations Office are unable to remedy this condition within a reasonable time, you may wish to advise the Environmental Protection Agency at the following address: Director, Manufacturer's Operations Division (6405J), United States Environmental Protection Agency, 401 M Street SW, Washington, DC 20460.

We are indeed sorry for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation in having this correction to your ISUZU vehicle completed.

IMPORTANT:
If you have sold your ISUZU vehicle, please enter the new owners name and address, if known, on the enclosed "Change of Information" postcard and drop it in the mail. Postage has already been paid. We will contact the new owner.
