Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Drain fluid from transaxle.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Disconnect negative cable from transaxle assembly.
4. Mark, then disconnect all electrical connectors from transaxle assembly.
5. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
6. Disconnect clutch cable from transaxle.
7. Disconnect shift and select cables from transaxle.
8. Remove air cleaner heat tube.
9. Remove upper transaxle to engine attaching bolts.
10. Raise and support vehicle.
11. Remove left front wheel assembly.
12. Remove splash shield.
13. Disconnect left tie rod at the steering knuckle.
14. Remove left tension rod.
15. Disconnect drive axles from transaxle. Remove shafts from the transaxle case by pulling straight out. Use care when removing drive axles from transaxle to prevent damage to oil seals.
16. Remove dust cover from clutch housing, then the crossmember retaining bolts and crossmember.
17. Using a suitable jack, support transaxle assembly.
18. Remove remaining bolts attaching transaxle to engine.
19. Remove transaxle by sliding toward the driver's side, away from engine. Carefully lower jack, guiding the right shaft out of the transaxle.
20. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque transaxle to engine mounting bolts to 55 ft. lbs., left tension rod attaching bolts to 80 ft. lbs., flywheel bolts to 65 ft. lbs. and remaining transaxle to engine attaching bolts to 55 ft. lbs.
b. Apply a suitable lubricant to drive gear shaft prior to installation.
c. Adjust clutch lash.
d. Fill transmission to proper level with specified lubricant.
