Turbocharger: Testing and Inspection
TCS Control Unit:
In addition to the ECM, this engine control system incorporates a separate Turbocharger Control System (TCS) control unit. The TCS control unit utilizes signals from various sensors, including the knock signal from the ECM, to calculate turbocharger operation. To regulate turbo output, the TCS control unit signals a stepping motor which opens and closes the turbo wastegate valve as directed. The TCS control unit has a self diagnosis system from which trouble codes can be extracted via an LED display.

TCS Self-Diagnosis:
TCS Trouble Code Chart:
Various system problems will set trouble codes which can be read from a flashing LED display on the TCS control unit. Access codes with these steps:
1. With ignition switch "ON," codes 2 and 6 (stored in memory) are displayed.
2. Depress accelerator pedal fully, then release. Code 6 will be cleared.
3. Start engine and code 2 will be cleared.
4. If the TCS control unit has detected a problem, the trouble code will now be displayed.
