Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Refer to Fig. 9, during removal and installation of cylinder head.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then mark hood hinge positions on hood for installation.
2. Remove engine hood, then drain radiator coolant.
3. Position engine timing mark at 0°TDC.
4. Remove throttle cable from throttle valve.
5. Remove air cleaner and air duct assembly.
6. Mark vacuum hose for installation, then disconnect vacuum hoses from engine.
7. Remove air pump switching valve and hoses.
8. Disconnect engine harness connectors from right side wheelwell.
9. Mark engine electrical connectors for installation, then disconnect electrical connectors from engine assembly.
10. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
11. Remove air pump and bracket, then the drive belts.
12. Remove engine cooling fan. It is not necessary to remove fan from vehicle. Store fan in radiator shroud.
13. Remove A/C compressor drive belt tensioner, then the water pump drive belt pulley.
14. Remove starter motor, then install flywheel holder tool No. J-38674 or equivalent.
15. Remove crankshaft pulley retaining bolt, then the crankshaft pulley.
16. Remove timing belt covers, then the timing belt.
17. Remove camshaft pulley, then the front plate.
18. Remove valve cover, then the rocker arm assembly.
19. Remove camshaft, then the cylinder head bolts.
20. Remove cylinder with manifolds from vehicle.
21. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply engine oil to thread and seating surface of cylinder head bolts prior to installation.
b. Torque Stage I: Torque cylinder head bolts to 58 ft. lbs. in sequence as shown in Fig. 10.
c. Torque Stage II: Torque cylinder head bolts to 72 ft. lbs. in sequence as shown in Fig. 10.
d. Torque rock arm assembly bolts 1 through 8 to 16 ft. lbs, then bolts 9 and 10 to 6 ft. lbs. in sequence as shown in Fig. 11.
e. Torque crankshaft pulley retaining bolt to 87 ft. lbs.
f. Refer to engine tightening specifications for additional torque values.
