Throttle Position Sensor (Auto Trans)
Throttle Position Sensor Testing:
1. Switch ignition "ON."
2. Slide the water shield back on the wires as illustrated. Do not separate the connector.
3. Probe the white wire with the "+" circuit tester lead.
NOTE: The three throttle position sensor leads are color coded as follows:
Red: 5V power source
White: output
Black: ground
4. Ensure that 5V (±0.5V) is measured at the red wire before proceeding.
5. Measure voltage at the black wire and check that it corresponds to these throttle positions:
Idle position: greater than 4V
Full position: less than 2V
6. The voltage difference between idle and full positions should be 3.6V (±1.0V).
FUEL CUT-OFF SYSTEM
Fuel Cut-Off System:
NOTE: Fuel cut-off is controlled by the throttle position sensor and reinjection is controlled by the throttle switch. This system is only used on the 2.0L Turbo engine and the 2.3L engine with automatic transmission.
1. Warm the engine to operating temperature and turn ignition "OFF."
2. Disconnect throttle valve switch harness connector and insert a fine wire into idle (upper) terminal.
3. Reinstall connector with wire exposed.
4. Disconnect throttle position sensor connector and jumper the connector terminals as illustrated.
CAUTION: Do not reconnect the throttle position sensor harness with the jumper wire installed. Component damage due to a short circuit may result.
5. Start engine and run at 2000-2500 rpm. When battery voltage is applied to the wire extending from the idle terminal, engine speed will lower to approximately 1250 rpm if the system is functioning properly. Engine hunting may occur but does not indicate a system malfunction.
