Four Wheel Drive

1. Drain transaxle and transfer case fluid, then disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
3. Mark the position of the hood to the hood hinges for alignment during installation, then remove hood.
4. Remove battery and battery bracket.
5. Remove intercooler, then air duct and air cleaner assembly from engine compartment.
6. Disconnect clutch cable, then shift and select cables from transaxle.
7. Disconnect electrical connectors from transaxle.
8. Working inside the passenger compartment, remove steering shaft protector from base of steering column.
9. Remove intermediate shaft pinch bolt, then disconnect steering shaft.
10. Remove three nuts retaining boot to steering shaft.
11. Working outside the vehicle, loosen left front hub nut.
12. Using an engine support bar or equivalent, support engine assembly.
13. Raise and support vehicle, then place safety stands at the front and rear of the vehicle.
14. Remove both front wheel and tire assemblies from vehicle.
15. Using Tie rod removal tool No. J-21687-02 or equivalent, remove tie rod ends from steering knuckles.
16. Remove left and right lower ball joint pinch bolts from steering knuckles.
17. Remove inner fenderwell undercovers, then front exhaust pipe.
18. Disconnect the propeller shaft from the transfer case.
19. Place drain pan under power steering pressure lines, then disconnect line connecting unions near front propeller shaft flange.
20. Remove torque rod through bolt at center beam.
21. Support engine mounting frame with transmission jack, then remove rear engine mount bolt.
22. Disconnect stabilizer bar from both steering knuckles.
23. Remove center beam and crossmember to body retaining bolts.
24. Lower the center beam and crossmember with the steering unit and stabilizer bar attached from vehicle as an assembly.
25. Insert pry bar between front CV joints and transaxle assembly, then carefully pry drive axle from transaxle. Do not insert the pry bar to deep or possible damage to the axle seal will result.
26. Using a transmission jack or equivalent, support the transfer case assembly.
27. Disconnect speedometer cable, then remove transfer case to transaxle retaining bolts.
28. Remove transfer case and O-ring from vehicle.
29. Remove torque rod and bracket, then flywheel inspection cover.
30. Using transmission jack or equivalent, support transaxle assembly.
31. Remove transaxle to engine retaining bolts, then lower transaxle from vehicle.
32. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply grease to the hub nut threads and shaft threads, then torque new hub nut to 137 ft. lbs., then stake nut.
b. Fill transaxle with SG or SF grade engine oil and transfer case with SAE 80W90 gear lubricant.
