Ignition Control Module: Description and Operation

DIS Module:

PURPOSE
Monitors and translates the signals from the crank angle sensors.
Allows the ECM to control ignition coil firing.

LOCATION
Under the DIS coil pack.

OPERATION
The module monitors the inductive pickup sensor signals. An rpm reference signal, based on cam angle sensor signals, is sent to the ECM so that correct spark control can be maintained during all driving conditions. During cranking, the DIS module monitors the "sync pulse" to begin the ignition timeing firing sequence. Below 400 rpm the module controls spark advance by triggering each of the two ignition coils at a predetermined interval based on engine speed only. Above 400 rpm the ECM controls spark timing (EST) and compensates for all driving conditions.

The DIS module is not repairable. When a module is replace, all parts must be transferred to the new unit.
