ISSUE DATE

GROUP
STEERING
IMPULSE (JI) AND STYLUS (JS) STEERING WHEEL CAMPAIGN
CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
Number 92-V-091 has been assigned to this campaign. This number will appear on all communications and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1990-92 Impulse (JI) and Stylus (JS) models:
- All 1990 models
- All 1991 models
- 1992 models up to VIN N7402545
* Except VINs listed in Attachment A.
SERVICE INFORMATION
Affected vehicles may exhibit a condition in which the steering wheel center hub may fracture during certain types of frontal or near-frontal impacts. This would reduce the driver's ability to control the vehicle to possibly avoid a second collision and could reduce the crash protection of the steering system and driver-side air bag.
To correct this condition, follow the instructions in this Campaign Bulletin for installing a steering wheel reinforcement plate to the steering wheel hub.
OWNER NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected vehicles will be notified by letter by American Isuzu Motors Inc. (copy enclosed).
DEALER RESPONSIBILITY
Isuzu dealers are responsible for repairing any affected vehicle regardless of date of purchase, mileage or selling dealer. All unsold vehicles in dealer stock that are subject to this campaign must be repaired per this Campaign Bulletin prior to delivering the vehicle to the consumer. Refer to Service Bulletin SB92-14-002 for details on dealer campaign responsibilities.
Each Isuzu dealer will be supplied a copy of the AIMI Campaign Report (AWS 123-1A), listing affected vehicles assigned to that dealership. The Report contains VIN and detailed owner information. If none of the affected vehicles were assigned to a dealership, no Report will be sent.
PARTS INFORMATION
These parts have been shipped automatically to each dealership (see illustration).
NOTE:
Dealers must return the following steering wheel assemblies in their stock, for retrofitting with the reinforcement plate. Please identify on the Parts Return Form as "Campaign Bulletin SB92-10-002, ATTN: Technical Operations."

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Install the steering wheel reinforcement plate and nut (provided in the kit) as follows:
WARNING
Failure to follow proper Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) module precautionary procedures could result in possible air bag deployment personal injury and/or unneeded SIR system repairs. Special care must be taken when handling a live (undeployed) SIR module. See Section 9J of the appropriate Workshop Manual.
1. Disconnect and tape the negative battery cable terminal before servicing the SIR system. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.
WARNING
The SIR module is equipped with a Diagnostic Energy Reserve module (DERM, which assures sufficient energy to deploy the SIR system if the ignition voltage is lost. The DERM can maintain sufficient voltage to cause air bag deployment for up to 10 minutes after the battery is disconnected. Wait at least ten minutes before proceeding to Step 2, to allow the SIR module to de-energize.
2. Refer to Figure 1.
a. Turn the steering wheel 900 from the neutral position. On the lower side of the steering wheel, remove the two bolts securing the SIR module to the steering wheel.
b. Turn the steering wheel 90~ in the other direction from the neutral position. Remove the remaining two SIR module fixing bolts.
3. Carefully remove the SIR module as follows:
a. While supporting the module (Figure 2), carefully unhook the lead wire from the back of the module.
b. Unlock the SIR connector by lifting the connector lock (Figure 3). Then disconnect the SIR connector.
4. Set the SIR module aside, face up.
WARNING
When carrying a live SIR module, make sure the bag and interior trim cover are pointed away from you. Never carry the SIR module by its wires or connector. Also, when placing a live (undeployed) SIR module on a bench or other surface, always face the bag and trim cover up, away from the surface. These precautions are necessary so that in the unlikely event of an accidental deployment, the bag will deploy with a minimal chance of injury.
5. Remove two steering wheel center plate screws and the horn harness connector bracket screw from the steering wheel center plate. Save all three screws.
6. Remove the horn harness connector bracket (Figure 4).
7. Remove the ignition key and ensure the steering wheel is locked.
8. Remove and discard the steering wheel fixing nut.
9. Position the new reinforcement plate (provided in kit) to the steering wheel center plate. See Figure 4.
10. Set the horn harness connector bracket on the plate, ensuring that the "L" portion of the bracket is properly positioned on top of the plate, as shown in Figure 4.
11. Reinstall the steering wheel center plate, using the screws removed in Step 5. Torque to 22.1 in.lbs. (2.5 N-m).
12. Install the new steering wheel fixing nut (provided in kit). Torque nut to 25.1 ft.lbs. (34 N-m). Ensure horn wiring harness is in place as shown in Figure 4, to prevent damaging the harness.
NOTE
If the horn wiring harness is pinched, it may cause the horn to sound continuously.
13. While carefully supporting the SIR module, reconnect the SIR connector and lock it securely in place.
14. Rehook the lead wire on the back side of the SIR module.
15. a. Turn the steering wheel 90~ from the neutral position and, from the lower side of the steering wheel, reinstall the two bolts that were removed in Step 2a. Torque bolts to 44.3 in.lbs. (5 N-m).
b. Turn the steering wheel 90~ in the other direction from the neutral position and reinstall the two bolts that were removed in Step 2b. Torque bolts to 44.3 in.lbs. (5 N-m).
16. Untape and reconnect the negative battery cable terminal.
17. Turn the ignition key to "ON". The SIR warning lamp should flash 6 to 9 times and then go off. If the SIR warning lamp does not operate properly, refer to Section 9J, Chart C of the appropriate Workshop Manual.
18. Affix a campaign label to the inside of the driver's door. Using a ball-point pen, fill in label with Campaign Number 92-V-091 and dealer code.
FLAT RATE MANUAL UPDATE INFORMATION
Use Trouble Code 07 for all Campaign operations.
