Engine: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then the positive cable.
2. Remove battery and battery tray.
3. Mark position of hood to hood hinges for alignment during installation, then remove hood.
4. Drain engine coolant from radiator, then transaxle fluid from transaxle assembly.
5. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle valve and common chamber.
6. Disconnect the breather hose from the intake air duct side, then remove air cleaner assembly from vehicle.
7. Mark position of all vacuum hoses for reassembly, then disconnect vacuum hoses from engine.
8. Disconnect two cable harness connectors (16 pin) near the lefthand strut tower.
9. Disconnect electrical connections from ignition coil.
10. Disconnect the ground cable from the thermostat housing flange.
11. Remove the ignition coil with battery bracket.
12. Disconnect battery harness ground cable from lefthand inner fender.
13. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect four electrical connectors from the transmission assembly.
14. On models equipped with manual transaxle, disconnect the clutch cable.
15. Remove transaxle shift cable from the transaxle assembly.
16. On all models, disconnect heater hoses from engine assembly.
17. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
18. Disconnect upper radiator hose from engine, then fuel return and supply hoses from fuel rail assembly. Relieve fuel system pressure. When removing fuel lines, cover line to be removed with a shop towel to prevent personal injury due to high fuel system pressures that may still be present.
19. Remove coolant reservoir tank, then power steering drive belt.
20. Remove the two power steering pump retaining bolts from the pump bracket without disconnecting the hydraulic lines, then position pump away from engine.
21. Remove the two bolts retaining A/C compressor to the engine. Do not disconnect refrigerant lines.
22. Disconnect lower radiator hose from the engine, then the transaxle cooling lines from the radiator, if equipped.
23. Remove radiator cooling fan shroud, then cooling fan.
24. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
25. Loosen the strut tower nuts on both sides. Do not remove nuts.
26. Remove the lower ball joint pinch bolts from the steering knuckles.
27. Using Tie Rod End Removal tool No. J-21687-02 or equivalent, disconnect tie rod ends from steering knuckle.
28. Using a screwdriver, remove driveshafts from the transaxle. Do not insert the screwdriver to deep or possible damage to the transaxle oil seal will result.
29. Remove engine undercover, then disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
30. Using an engine hoist or equivalent, support engine assembly.
31. Disconnect torque rod from center beam, then remove damper weight.
32. Remove lefthand engine mount, then the cruise control pump, if equipped.
33. Remove the right side engine mount, then axle shaft center bearing support bracket, if equipped.
34. Remove engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.
35. Separate engine from transaxle.
36. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque transaxle to engine retaining bolts to 69 ft. lbs.
