Engine: Service and Repair
1. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.2. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
3. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery and battery tray.
4. Scribe hood alignment marks for installation reference, then remove engine hood.
5. Drain radiator coolant, then transaxle fluid.
6. Remove air cleaner and air duct assembly.
7. Remove accelerator cable from throttle valve and common chamber.
8. Mark vacuum lines for installation reference, then disconnect vacuum lines from MAP sensor, vacuum booster and canister.
9. Mark all electrical connections for installation reference, then disconnect electrical connections from engine and transaxle assembly.
10. Remove clutch cable, then the transaxle shift cable.
11. Remove fuel feed and return hoses.
12. Disconnect oil cooler pipes from oil cooler.
13. Disconnect heater hoses, then remove coolant reservoir.
14. Remove power steering pump and bracket from engine and position aside.
15. Remove lower and upper radiator hoses.
16. Remove A/C compressor from engine and position aside.
17. Remove radiator mounting panel, then the radiator assembly.
18. Raise and support vehicle, then remove left and right undercovers.
19. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from manifold.
20. Remove front wheel assemblies, then loosen strut tower nuts. Do not remove nuts.
21. Remove left side hub nut from front drive axle.
22. Remove left and right lower ball joint pinch bolts.
23. Using tie rod removal tool No. J-21687-02, or equivalent, remove tie rod ends from steering knuckle assemblies.
24. Using a pry bar, remove driveshafts from transaxle assembly.
25. Support engine with suitable engine hoist, then remove heat protector from manifold converter.
26. Disconnect torque rod from center beam.
27. Remove bolt connecting rear side mounting with bracket on transfer case.
28. Remove lefthand engine mounting with intercooler brace.
29. Remove cruise control pump and VSV assembly, if equipped.
30. Remove right side engine mounting.
31. Remove engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.
32. Reverse procedure to install.
