Engine: Service and Repair
1. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.2. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable, then the positive cable.
4. Remove battery and battery tray.
5. Mark position of hood to hood hinges for alignment during installation, then remove hood.
6. Drain engine coolant from radiator, then the transaxle fluid.
7. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle valve and common chamber.
8. Disconnect breather hose from intake air duct side, then remove air cleaner assembly from vehicle.
9. Mark position of all vacuum hoses for reassembly, then disconnect vacuum hoses from engine.
10. Disconnect two cable harness connectors (16 pin) near lefthand strut tower.
11. Disconnect electrical connections from ignition coil.
12. Disconnect ground cable from thermostat housing flange.
13. Remove ignition coil with battery bracket.
14. Disconnect battery harness ground cable from lefthand inner fender.
15. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect four electrical connectors from transmission assembly.
16. On models with manual transaxle, disconnect clutch cable and transaxle shift cable from transaxle assembly.
17. Disconnect heater hoses from engine assembly.
18. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
19. Disconnect upper radiator hose from engine, then the fuel return and supply hoses from fuel rail assembly.
20. Remove coolant reservoir tank, then the power steering drive belt.
21. Remove two power steering pump retaining bolts from pump bracket without disconnecting hydraulic lines, then position pump away from engine.
22. Remove two bolts retaining A/C compressor to engine. Do not disconnect refrigerant lines.
23. Disconnect lower radiator hose from engine, then the transaxle cooling lines from the radiator, if equipped.
24. Remove radiator cooling fan shroud, then the cooling fan.
25. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
26. Loosen strut tower nuts on both sides. Do not remove nuts.
27. Remove lower ball joint pinch bolts from steering knuckles.
28. Using tie rod end removal tool No. J-21687-02, or equivalent, disconnect tie rod ends from steering knuckle.
29. Using a screwdriver, remove driveshafts from transaxle. Do not insert screwdriver to deep or possible damage to transaxle oil seal will result.
30. Remove engine undercover, then disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
31. Using a suitable engine hoist, support engine assembly.
32. Disconnect torque rod from center beam, then remove damper weight.
33. Remove lefthand engine mount, then the cruise control pump, if equipped.
34. Remove right side engine mount, then the axle shaft center bearing support bracket, if equipped.
35. Remove engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.
36. Separate engine from transaxle.
37. Reverse procedure to install, ensuring to tighten to specifications.
38. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
