Recall - Cruise Control Defect: Overview

RECALL
No.: 6 D349

RECALL XJ-S/XJ12 III CRUISE CONTROL

Date: May, 1990

Model:
XJ-S/XJ12 III

KEY POINTS:
RECALL INFORMATION AND REPAIR PROCEDURE

Jaguar Cars Exports Ltd. has determined that, on a range of 1979 XJ12 Series III and 1982-1990 XJ-S vehicles, it is possible that the electronically controlled valves in the cruise control actuator may not function properly due to dirt ingress. If this occurs, the cruise control will fail to disengage under normal operating conditions.

The affected VIN Range, is shown.

NOTE:
Ensure that all affected vehicles have their cruise control systems immobilized until the recall repair can be performed. Refer to the Warranty section of this bulletin for claim submitting procedure for cruise control control system immobilization.

DEALER VEHICLE CAMPAIGN LIST

"Dealer Campaign List" not included listing affected vehicles which were invoiced to you. If a campaign list is not enclosed, then (according to our records), you did not receive any of the affected vehicles.

It may be necessary to perform recall campaign work on a vehicle that was not invoiced to your dealership (i.e., transient owner, etc.). If this occurs, normal repair procedures should be followed.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Beginning May 21st all owners of record will be issued recall notifications via first class mail. Included will also be a letter advising them of this condition. (A copy of the owners letter is shown.

Owners will be asked to contact their selling dealer (or nearest authorized dealer) and make an appointment for repair work. They will also be asked to sign and return the "Campaign Claim" form to the dealer.

PARTS INFORMATION

NOTE:
Ensure that your Parts Manager receives a copy of this bulletin.

Parts will be shipped to you by your Zone Office (chargeable) on an allocation basis. You will receive initial parts supplies by the recall launch date. Reimbursement will be through the normal campaign procedures. "D349" campaign completion labels are enclosed in your bulletin package.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

General/Repair Codes:

Complete the applicable "Campaign Claim" form (See Section I of the Warranty Manual). Insert in the "Repair Code" box on the "Campaign Claim" the appropriate repair code.

Vehicles in Warranty (Additional Parts Requirements):

If the cruise control does not function correctly after the vehicle road test, diagnose and repair the fault as necessary.

A separate warranty claim must be submitted for each component replaced.

CRUISE CONTROL ACTUATOR IMMOBILIZATION CLAIM PROCEDURE

The information shown is the necessary fault code and labor operation information to file claims for the temporary action to immobilize the cruise control actuator (as per the Jaguar Cars Inc. letter which was sent to you February 22, 1990).

The cruise control system modification procedure is as follows:

^ Disconnect the negative battery cable lead.

^ Disconnect the cruise control actuator vacuum hose from the Right-Hand side inlet manifold stub pipe.

^ Cut and remove the vacuum hose/harness retaining straps from the A/C high pressure refrigerant pipe to muffler assembly.

^ Remove the cruise control actuator mounting bracket bolt, and disconnect the three way electrical connector. Disconnect the actuator throttle cable if it has not been previously disconnected.

^ Note the routing of the vacuum hose to the cruise control actuator.

^ Reposition the actuator and remove the vacuum hose securing clip. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the actuator. Retain the clip and discard the hose.

^ Install the securing clip to the new vacuum hose, (CBC 2591/6, fig, 1 A). Connect the hose to the actuator and reposition the clip to secure the hose. Route the vacuum hose as it was originally.

^ Reinstall the actuator to the mounting bracket and tighten the mounting bolt.

NOTE:
Perform the following operation on a workbench.

^ Install hose clip AGU 2536 (fig. 1 A) to vacuum hose EAC 8022/31 (fig. 1 C) and secure to the new solenoid valve EAC 7905, as indicated in fig. 1D.

^ Install the hose clip AGU 2536 (fig. 1 E) to vacuum hose EAC 8022/36 (fig. 1 F) and secure to the new solenoid valve as indicated in fig. 1 D.

^ Install the vacuum reducers EAC 9286 (fig. 1 G) to the vacuum hoses attached to the solenoid valve.

^ Install vacuum hose CBC 2591/18 (fig. 1 H) to the hose reducer, (fig. 1 G).

The following procedure is dependant on vehicle specification:

SPECIFICATION "A":

SERIES III V-12

XJ-S (Pre Teves) UP TO VIN 148781
XJ-S CONVERTIBLE (Pre Teves) UP TO VIN 148781

THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE SHOULD BE USED FOR SPECIFICATION "A" VEHICLES:

^ Remove the Right-Hand side outer cam cover mounting nuts and washers, (fig. 1 J), and the rear inner nut which secures the fuel injector wiring harness P clip. Remove the P clip and discard. Reinstall the rear inner nut and tighten to 8 ft. lbs.

^ Cut the rearmost tie strap which secures the the fuel injector harness to Right-Hand coolant top hose.

^ Reroute the harness along the high pressure refrigerant pipe on top of the Right-Hand cam cover.

^ Position the solenoid mounting bracket DAC 7739 (fig.1 K) on the outer cam cover studs. Reinstall the washers and tighten the nuts to 8 ft. lbs.

^ Position the solenoid valve and vacuum hose assembly on the mounting bracket stud. Install the lock washer and nut included in the recall kit. This procedure continues at *.

SPECIFICATION "B":

XJ-S (With Teves Brakes) FROM VIN 148782
XJ-S CONVERTIBLE (With Teves Brakes) FROM VIN 147269

THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE SHOULD BE USED FOR SPECIFICATION "B" VEHICLES:

^ Remove the nut and washer which mounts the Right-Hand air cleaner assembly to the forward mounting bracket.

^ Position the solenoid valve and vacuum hose assembly on the mounting bracket stud.

^ Reinstall the washer and nut and torque to 8 ft. lbs. This procedure continues at *.

* Connect the vacuum hose to the Right-Hand inlet manifold stub as indicated in fig. 1 H.

^ Connect the vacuum hose (fig. 1 H) to the vacuum hose reducer, (fig. 1 G).

^ Connect the new link harness (DAC 7721, fig. 1 M) to the solenoid valve, (fig. 1 D).

^ Connect the new link harness to the cruise control actuator and the engine harness. These connectors cannot be incorrectly installed due to the offset plugs.

^ Using tie straps (ADU 9028) secure the vacuum pipe, link harness and fuel injector harness to the A/C high pressure refrigerant pipe, and secure the actuator harness plugs to the fuel rail balance pipe, (fig. 1 N).

CAUTION:
Ensure that the vacuum hoses are not crushed by the tie straps.

^ Reconnect the cruise control actuator throttle cable to the actuator, and adjust (as necessary) to ensure that the actuator does not affect normal throttle operation.

^ Reconnect the battery negative cable lead.

^ Road test the vehicle to ensure the following:

- The system is operating.

- The desired speed is maintained within +/- 2 MPH. (The system will not operate below 21-23 MPH.

- The set speed disengages when the brakes are applied and can be re-engaged by operating the resume function of the master on/of/resume switch.

- When the master switch is turned off, the set speed memory and cruise control function is lost.

^ Adhere the D 349 recall campaign identification label to the rearmost cross brace on the underside of the hood.
