Front Upper Suspension - Knock/Creak Noise

90jaguar02

SECTION: 60
FRONT SUSPENSION No: 3

Models: Date: FEBRUARY, 1990

KEY POINTS: FRONT SUSPENSION MOUNTING CREAKS

FIG. 1:

Front upper suspension creaks may exist on some XJ-S vehicles, originating from interference between the washers and the inner face of the suspension mounting apertures. This condition may occur on a bump or when cornering, and can be identified as a knock/creak noise from the front of the vehicle.

A new washer with a reduced outside diameter (CBC 6608) has been introduced at VIN 164362, to prevent interference.

If interference condition exists, use the following procedure:

^ Remove the shock absorber thread protection cap on the right hand side of the vehicle.

^ Remove the front shock absorber upper mounting nut.

^ Remove and discard the top washer, (Fig. 1).
^ Install the new washer (CBC 6608) to the shock absorber.

^ Install and tighten the upper mounting nut. Torque the nut to 61-68 N-m.

^ Reinstall the shock absorber thread protection cap.

^ Repeat the procedure on the left hand side of the vehicle.
