ITEM: J83/68
MODEL: XJ6 & XJ-S HE
SUBJECT: FUEL INJECTOR CLEANING
Technical Service Bulletin J83/49, issued in September, 1983, referred to methods of injector cleaning and testing using a machine available from Miller Special Tools.
The bulletin also suggested the building of a cleaning rig using available vehicle components and commercial cleaners.
The following is a suggested cleaning rig assembled from parts readily available through W.W. Granger Inc., 169 localities nationwide. For information on local distributors, contact:
W.W. GRANGER INC. 5959 W. Howard Street Chicago, Illinois 60648

Components Required
1 production paint tank, Granger P/N 2Z367.
4 male quick disconnect couplings, Granger P/N 6X420.
1 female quick disconnect couplings, Granger P/N 6X415.
3 female barbs, 1/4" x 1/2", 3/8" x 1/2", 5/16" x 1/2" - local supply.
1 fuel injection fuel filter - local supply.
8' fuel injection hose 1/4" ID - local supply.
4 aero type hose clamps - local supply.
The following illustration shows the assembly of the paint tank and related parts.
CAUTION: CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WHEN WORKING WITH PRESSURIZED TANK. BE SURE TO FOLLOW MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND DO NOT EXCEED PRESSURE LIMITS.
Procedure for On-Vehicle Cleaning
1. Fill up paint tank with one-part injector to 7-parts unleaded gasoline.
2. Depressurize injection system.
3. Disconnect electrical feed to vehicle fuel pump.
4. Remove cold start injector hose and attach suitably sized barbed hose adaptor.
5. Pinch off fuel return hose to the tank with a girling hose clamp.
6. Attach fuel line from cleaning tank via the quick disconnect coupling to the hose adaptor.
7. Attach shop air line to cleaner tank and adjust pressure to 35 PSI. Start engine and run for 15 minutes or until improvement in rpm is noted.
8. Disconnect shop air line, depressurize cleaning tank via the ring pull on pressure relief valve and disconnect system.
9. Reconnect hose to cold start injector, remove girling hose clamp, start the engine and check for fuel leaks.
NOTE: It is recommended that the engine oil and filter be changed at this time as oil dillution could result from the cleaning procedure.
