Fault Diagnosis

FAULT DIAGNOSIS






STATIONARY TEST FINDINGS

22. Starter will not operate in 'P' or 'N' or operates in all positions.

22. Faulty operation of reverse lights.

3, 4. Excessive bump on engagement of "D", "1" and "R".

2, 9. Drives in N also giving judder or no drive in "R" depending on degree of front clutch seizure.


STALL TEST FINDINGS

4. Stall test shows over 2 100rev/mm (transmission slip), with possible squawk in "1" and "R".

9. a. only in "1".

6,8,10,21,15,. b. only in "R"

20. Stall test shows under 1 300rev/mm (slipping stator).


DRIVING TEST FINDINGS

Selection faults


2. Incorrect selection of all positions except "P".

16. Parking pawl does not hold vehicle.


Ratio faults

1,2,4,. No drive in "D", "2", "1" or "R" but "P" operates.

12,13,9. No drive in "D", "2" or "1".

17. No drive in "D" 1st ratio.

23. No drive in "1" and transmission binding during shift from "1" to "D".

5,7,11. No second ratio.

11. No D3 (Reverse indicating rear clutch normal).

6. Drag in "D".

5. Drag in "D", "1" and reverse.

6,8,15. No engine braking in "1" and no drive in reverse ratio.

11. Moves off in 2nd ratio in "D" and "1" and no drive in reverse or engine braking in "1".


Shift point faults

4,12,13. Incorrect or erratic "kick-down" and/or light throttle shift points.

11. 1-2 shift only incorrect.

11. 2-3 shifts only incorrect.

12,13. No up-shifts.

11. Lack of "up-shifts" and no reverse ratio.

12. Moves off with possible transmission slip.

20. Reduced maximum speed in all ratios, more so in "D", and severe converter overheating.


Shift quality faults

4. Bumpy and possibly delayed shifts.

5,7,11,14. Slip (engine "flare-up") shifting into and out of second ratio.

10,11,21. Slip (engine "flare-up") on 2-3 and 3-2 shifts.


Noise faults

18. Whining noise from converter area, continuous whenever the engine is running.

19. Irregular (possibly grating) noises from gearbox but not in "D".

24. Whine from converter, for short period following engine starting after vehicle has been standing for, say, not less than 12 hours.
