SUBJECT:

RECALL CAMPAIGN A284 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT
MODELS:

1982-1983 XJ-S

November 1983
The California Air Resources Board has determined that 1982-1983 XJ-S vehicles have failed to comply with the California oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission standards. It will be necessary to replace the electronic control unit (ECU) on 1982-1983 XJ-S vehicles registered in the State of California.

IMPORTANT:

THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN (A284) AFFECTS ONLY 1982 - 1983 XJ-S VEHICLES REGISTERED IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.

V.I.N. RANGES:

Model
Year Model Code VIN Range

1982 XJ-S 4223 SAJNV584*CC 105338 - 107987

1983 XJ-S 4223 SAJNV584*DC 107988 - 112231

(California registered vehicles only)

SOME OF THE PROCEDURES REQUIRED IN THIS RECALL ARE CONTRARY TO ESTABLISHED WARRANTY PROCEDURES. READ THIS BULLETIN CAREFULLY.

DEALER VEHICLE CAMPAIGN LIST

Enclosed is a "Dealer Campaign List" listing all affected vehicles which, according to our records, were invoiced to you. Use this list as a worksheet and check off each vehicle as the recall work is completed.

If a list is not enclosed, then, according to our records, you did not receive any of the affected vehicles, and this bulletin is for your information.

If any vehicle listed as in dealer stock has, in fact, been retailed, the dealer must contact the owner and advise him to return the vehicle for the-necessary recall repair.

The occasion may arise where you are asked to perform recall campaign work on a vehicle that was not invoiced to you (i.e. transient owner, etc.). In such a case, normal recall procedure should be followed.
OWNER NOTIFICATION

The owner notifications for this recall campaign will be mailed in three separate stages: first the Los Angeles area, second the San Francisco area, and third San Diego and the remainder of the state. Commencing November 9, 1983, all owners of record in the Los Angeles area (mailings to San Francisco and San Diego/remainder of state areas will follow at approximate six week intervals), will be sent recall notifications by first class mail together with a letter advising them of the condition. (A copy of the owner's letter is attached.) They will be asked to contact their selling dealer or nearest authorized Jaguar dealer if more convenient, and make an appointment to have their vehicle attended to. They will be asked to sign and turn over the "Campaign Claim" form to you after the work has been performed.

IMPORTANT!

IF, AFTER FOUR WEEKS FROM THE RESPECTIVE MAILING DATE, YOU HAVE NOT BEEN CONTACTED BY A CUSTOMER ON YOUR LIST, A RESPONSIBLE MEMBER OF YOUR DEALERSHIP MUST CALL OR WRITE THE CUSTOMER REMINDING HIM OF THIS RECALL. IF A FURTHER TWO WEEKS PASS AFTER YOUR CALL AND THERE IS NO RESPONSE, CALL THE CUSTOMER AGAIN AND ARRANGE FOR ONE OF YOUR MECHANICS TO PERFORM THE NECESSARY RECALL REPAIR AT THE OWNER'S HOME OR PLACE OF BUSINESS. COSTS RELATED TO THESE EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES WILL BE REIMBURSED SEPARATELY. CONTACT YOUR ZONE OFFICE FOR DETAILS.

PARTS INFORMATION

Replacement parts will be shipped to you, chargeable, by your zone Office. These parts will arrive at your dealership by the date stated in the owner letter (dates will vary depending upon dealer location; Los Angeles - Area 1, San Francisco - Area 2, San Diego and remainder of state - Area 3) . Reimbursement for labor and parts will be made through the normal campaign system except where noted. Adequate supplies of "A284" campaign completion labels are enclosed in this bulletin package.
Additional quantities of labels may be ordered through Mr. J. Dabrowski in Leonia.
