Catalytic Converter: Description and Operation
Catalytic converters are included in the exhaust system in order to reduce the amount of emissions of CO, HC, and NOx
Two catalytic converters are installed, one on each side of the exhaust. The active material is rhodium, approximately 2 grams in each unit spread over the large internal surface area of the cellular ceramic supporting material. The material is susceptible to breakage if the container is damaged. This could lead to blockage of the exhaust system. The catalytic converters should therefore, be inspected during routine service, but no other maintenance is required.
