Vacuum Advance Unit
NOTE: Check operation of replacement vacuum unit before beginning this procedure.
1. Remove three bolts securing cruise control actuator to A/C compressor and disconnect actuator wire harness connector.
2. Disconnect vacuum hose from actuator and lay actuator aside.
3. Remove ignition wires.
Distributor:
4. Remove vent hoses from distributor cap and remove cap.
5. Remove ignition rotor and flash shield.
Ignition Coils:
6. Disconnect coil wire from distributor cap.
7. Disconnect wiring from primary coil.
8. Remove two bolts securing coil mounting bracket to throttle pedestal and remove coil.
9. Remove roll pin securing advance unit to distributor housing. Carefully drive pin downward completely through body and recover pin when knocked out.
10. Disconnect advance unit rod from pick-up mounting plate and remove advance unit.
11. Check fit of new vacuum unit. Be sure it will fit fully into position.
12. With new unit in place, drill new hole through advance unit, if needed.
13. Fit gasket to advance unit and install unit into housing. Be sure vacuum unit link engages pick-up mounting plate.
14. Install roll pin.
15. Reverse steps 1-5 to refit.
16. Check ignition timing. Refer to Powertrain Management/Ignition System/Adjustments.
