Recall - Cruise Control Not Functioning Properly
90jaguar03Safety Recall Campaign D349
Dear Jaguar Owner;
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Jaguar Cars Exports Ltd, has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in a small group of 1979 XJ 12 Series III vehicles and in 1982 to 1990 model year Jaguar XJS vehicles. This range includes your vehicle as identified by the vehicle Identification Number on the enclosed "Campaign Claim" form. The Vehicle Identification Number quoted on the "Campaign Claim" form is also stamped on a metal plate attached to the left-hand side of the windshield frame of your Jaguar.
On vehicles bearing a VIN number within this range, the possibility exists that the valves controlling the operation of the cruise control actuator are not functioning properly, such that the cruise control will fail to disengage in the normal manner. If this should occur, there is also the possibility that the driver could lose control of the vehicle and the vehicle could crash, but this risk can be minimized or eliminated by applying the brakes.
You should take immediate action in accordance with the terms of this letter as follows:
You are requestod to contact your selling dealer (if this proves inconvenient, contact any authorized Jaguar dealer) and make an appointment to immediately have the cruise control in your vehicle disabled. As soon as parts beconie available, your dealer will install an extra vacuum dump valve without charge to you and check and possibly replace the cruise control actuator.
The labor time to complete the repair is approximately one hour. Initial parts supply will be available at your dealer on May 21, 1990.
Please be sure to sign the "Campaign Claim" form in the space provided and present it to your dealer upon completion of the work. The dealer will then send us the form so that we can be sure your vehicle has been attended to.
If you no longer own this vehicle, please refer to the instructions on the last page of the "Campaign Claim" form and, if possible, provide the name and address of the present owner in order that we may send the necessary recall notification.
If, after you have contacted your dealer, you experience any difficulties in obtaining the necessary repairs, please contact the Jaguar Cars Inc. Zone office (listed below) for your area. Your Passport to Service contains a listing of states covered by each Zone.
If your dealer does not carry out this work without charge and within 60 days of your first delivering the vehicle for repairs (beginning on or after May 21, 1990), you may submit a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Washington D.C. 20590, or call the toll free Auto Safety Hotline at 1-600-424-9393, (Washington D.C. area residents may call 366-0123). We request that you also contact the Customer Relations Department at Jaguar Cars Inc., 555 MacArthur Blvd., Mahwah, New Jersey 07430 (201) 818-8500.
