Reassemble

1. Examine the adjusting pads for signs of indentation. Renew, if necessary, with appropriate size when making valve clearances adjustment on reassembly.
2. Test the valve springs for pressure either by checking against Valve Spring Data or against a new spring.
3. Examine the valves for pitting, burning or distortion, and reface or renew valves as necessary.
4. Reface the valve seats in the cylinder head and grind the valves to their respective seats using a suction valve tool.
5. When refacing valves or seat inserts do not remove more metal than is necessary to clean up the facings.
6. Refit the valves in the order removed and place the cylinder head on the wooden blocks.

Installed Valve:

7. Refit the valve spring seats (2) and refit the inlet valve guide oil seals.
8. Refit the springs and collars (3).
9. Compress the springs using service tool JD 61 18C and fit the split cotters (4). Tap the valve stems to ensure that the cotters are seated.
10. Fit the adjusting pads and tappets (5) to their respective valves.

CAUTION: Camshafts must not be rotated independently.

11. Fit the camshaft shell bearings, locate one camshaft and secure the bearing cap nuts working from the center outwards. Tighten the nuts to the correct torque.
12. Check the tappet adjustment (One camshaft at a time), and adjust as needed.
13. Align each camshaft using camshaft timing tool C3993, or equivalent.
