Rear Axle Whine - Repair Procedure

SUBJECT: REAR AXLE WHINE
MODEL: XJ6 & VANDEN PLAS
The following procedure should be adopted in vehicles that exhibit a tendency for axle whine in the highway speed range.
Refer to Series III Repair Operation Manual, AKM-9006, Book 9, Page 51-2, the section of operation 51.20.01, Checking Pinion Preload.
1. Remove rear of driveshaft at the final drive flange.
2. Using a suitable torque wrench or torque screw driver, check the torque required to turn the pinion flange through the backlash.
(Note: Turn flange counter clockwise through the backlash between each check.)
3. The torque should be 25-30 lbs ins. The flange nut must be tightened to achieve this figure. CAUTION: Do not overtighten or exceed 45 lbs ins.
4. Replace driveshaft and drain the axle. Insert the contents of 2 tubes of P/N RTC-1001, Hypoid Axle Oil Stabilizer and top up with EP-90 Hypoid Oil.
In accordance with previous instructions issued, final drive assemblies are not to be changed for noise problems until at least a 3,000 mile bed-in period has elapsed.
