SUBJECT: BORG WARNER TRANSMISSION - REMOVE & REPLACE PRECAUTIONS
MODEL: XJ6 & VDP It is essential that dealer technicians are made aware of the importance of carrying out certain procedures prior to refitting BORG WARNER AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. The following checks
and procedures must be completed:
1. The DRIVE PLATE must be examined for cracks in the area of the securing bolt holes and rivets before the torque convertor is refitted. If the drive plate is cracked, it must be replaced. Locating dowels in the crankshaft must be used when fitting the new drive plate.
NOTE: Some later Series III vehicles may not have the dowels fitted.
If a replacement transmission is fitted with a cracked drive plate, knocking noises will be evident from the area of the torque convertor.
2. The TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER and oil lines MUST be thoroughly flushed with ATF in order to remove all traces of contamination which could remain in the system as a result of an earlier transmission failure.
If the flushing procedure is not diligently carried out, there will almost certainly be a failure of the replacement transmission.
The following is an extract from TSB J81/32, issued in December, 1981. In the absence of proper flushing equipment, the following flushing procedure should be adopted:
a) After fitting the replacement transmission and before the initial engine start, overfill the transmission with 1 quart of ATF.
b) Leave the rear cooler pipe return connection to the transmission off.
c) Run engine and flush the extra ATF into a suitable container.
d) Remake pipe connections and check the fluid level.
3. Care must be taken to ensure that the 2 dowels locating the convertor case to the cylinder block are fitted. These dowels can be misplaced when the transmission is removed.
4. Proper adjustment of the GEAR SELECTOR CABLE must be made as described in operation 44.15.08 of the Repair Operation Manual, Book 7, P/N AKM-9006.
Failure to have the correct operation of the selector cable could result in early failure of clutches & bands.
5. DOWNSHIFT CABLE adjustment must also be checked as described in operation 44.30.03 contained in the previously mentioned repair operation manual and repeated in Technical Service Bulletin J82/04, issued in June, 1982.
Dealers must be aware that warranty claims will not be allowed for failures of replacement automatic transmissions returned to Borg Warner if their checking procedures indicate a transmission failure due to improper installer adjustment or flushing precedures. Claims for failures of this nature will be debited back to the installing dealer.
