Front Crankshaft - Revised Oil Seal Replacement

SUBJECT: CRANKSHAFT FRONT OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT

MODEL: XJ6 & VDP


The following revised procedure for the replacement of the front oil seal does not require the complete removal of the oil pan.

Remove

^ Open the hood.

^ Remove the left-hand upper engine mounting securing nut.

^ Slacken the fixings securing the air conditioning compressor, and pivot the compressor towards the engine.

^ Remove the air cleaner assembly.


^ Slacken the fixings securing the power steering pump, and pivot the pump towards the engine.

^ Remove the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor drive belts.

^ Jack up the vehicle and support the body on stands.

^ Remove the right-hand engine mounting securing nut.

^ Slacken the alternator fixings to allow the alternator to be pivoted towards the engine, and remove the alternator drive belt.

^ Remove the alternator link arm assembly from the engine.
^ Remove the bolts securing the transmission oil cooler to the body.

^ Knock back the locking tabs securing the crankshaft pulley bolts, remove the bolts and tab washer.

^ Remove the power steering pump pulley and the air conditioning compressor pulleys from the crankshaft damper.

^ Remove the crankshaft damper securing bolt, and remove the damper, damper mounting cone and woodruff key.

^ Remove the bolts securing the crash bracket to the bell housing and pan, and remove the bracket.

^ Remove the screws securing the transmission cooler pipe clamps to the pan brackets, and remove the clamps.

^ Carefully move aside the cooler pipes for access.

^ Remove all the pan bolts except for the two at the rear; these should be left loose.

NOTE: The special short bolt is from the right front.

^ Remove the transmission cooler pipe brackets.

^ Position a hoist above the engine and connect the chain to the engine front lifting eye. Carefully raise the engine as high as it will go, taking care not to put any strain on pipes, hoses, cables, etc.

^ Carefully displace the pan, from the cylinder block, taking care not to damage the gasket.

^ Carefully remove the distance piece and front oil seal, taking care not to damage the surface of the crankshaft or the oil seal recess. Remove and discard the O-ring from the distance piece.

^ Clean the distance piece and crankshaft.

^ Carefully clean the pan gasket and front oil seal mating faces.

Refitting

^ Liberally coat a new seal with clean engine oil and locate it in the timing" cover recess, open side inwards.

^ Fit a new O-ring to the distance piece, lubricate with clean engine oil, and fit the distance piece onto the crankshaft.

^ Carefully lower the engine onto its mountings.

^ Disconnect the hoist chain from the engine front lifting eye and move the hoist aside.

^ Position the pan to the cylinder block; fit the transmission oil cooler pipe brackets.

^ Secure the pan to the cylinder block with the nuts and bolts.

^ Position the transmission oil cooler pipes, fit and secure the clamp brackets.

^ Refit the crash bracket to the pan and bell housing.

^ Clean the crankshaft damper mounting cone and woodruff key.

^ Fit the woodruff key, damper mounting cone and crank damper to the crankshaft. Tighten the crank damper retaining bolt. Position a new tab washer to the bolt to ensure that the tab washer will be correctly positioned after the pulleys. have been refitted.

^ Remove the tab washer and refit the air conditioning compressor and power steering pump drive pulleys to the crankshaft damper.

^ Fit the new tab washer, tighten the bolts and knock over the tab washer ears to secure the crankshaft pulley retaining bolts.

^ Refit the alternator link arm, refit the alternator drive belt, and position the alternator to obtain the correct drive belt tension.

^ Refit the right-hand engine mounting nut.

^ Lower the vehicle from the stands.

^ Refit the air conditioning compressor drive belt, and position the compressor to obtain the correct drive belt tension.

^ Refit the power steering pump drive belt, position the pump to obtain the correct drive belt tension.

^ Refit the air cleaner assembly.

^ Close the hood.
