88jaguar01SELECTOR CABLE ADJUSTMENT
SECTION: 44
No: 5
Model: XJ6 3.6 Date: JANUARY, 1988
KEY POINTS: IMPROVED ADJUSTMENT AND SETTING PROCEDURE
Commencing from VIN 507776, an improved gear selector cable/ linear switch setting procedure is incorporated on XJ6 3.6 vehicles during production.
If gear selector cable adjustment becomes necessary, the following service checks and cable adjustment procedure should be performed.
Service Checks:
1. Engine should start only with the gear selector in the "P" or "N" position.
2. Reverse lights should illuminate only when "R" is selected.
3. Instrument pack gear indicator display should correspond with gear selector lever indicator.
4. Transmission parking lock mechanism is engaged with gear selector in position "P".
5. Gear selector lever aligns centrally with position "R" and "N" detents in gear-selector module gate.
6. Gear selector lever should shift smoothly across J-gate in position "D".
LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE:
FIGURE 1:
1. Set transmission selector lever in "N" position.
2. Connect gear selector cable to gear selector lever.
3. Adjust ball end connector, (Fig. 1, B), to achieve a dimension of 2-7/8", (Fig. 1, A), and tighten ball end locknut. Ensure that the inner cable to slider block location remains aligned and inner cable is not twisted within the outer cable.
FIGURE 2:
4. Set transmission selector lever and gear selector lever to position "D".
5. Connect inner cable to slider block (Fig. 2, A), and tighten retaining nut.
6. Adjust the outer cable locknuts until the gear selector lever shifts smoothly across the J-gate "D" position with the minimum of inner cable movement.
7. Install gear selector lever module onto housing.
8. Ensure that the gear selector lever (when in position "N") aligns centrally with "N" detent position of module.
FIGURE 3:
NOTE: On earlier vehicles it may be necessary to stretch the J-gate housing, (Fig. 3, A), to ensure that the correct position is achieved.
9. Secure gear selector lever and tighten the four mounting screws. Ensure that the lever transfers smoothly across the J-gate.
FIGURE 4:
10. Shift gear selector lever to "N" position.
11. Install the linear switch, Fig. 4, A), but do not tighten the securing screws, (Fig. 4, B).
12. Position the Setting Gauge (Service Tool JD 127) between the linear switch and side plate.
13. Ensure that the Setting Gauge slot is fully installed onto the linear switch and tighten the securing screws.
14. Remove the Setting Gauge.
15. Repeat SERVICE CHECKS/Check system operation.
