A/T - Shudder During 1to 2 Gear Shift

87jaguar01

1-2 GEAR SHIFT
SECTION: 44
No: 2
Model: XJ6 3.6 Date: DECEMBER, 1987
KEY POINTS: VALVE BODY MODIFICATION
To eliminate transmission shudder during the 1-2 shift under acceleration, a revised transmission valve body has been incorporated.

Transmission Part Number EBC 2164 replaces EBC 1171, from engine No. 9DP 126748, VIN 526305.

A quantity of the existing transmissions, EBC 1171, had the revised valve block incorporated before this change and are identified from transmissions serial number 391-676802, which were introduced at engine number 9DP 108835, and VIN 522801.

Where instances of this complaint are reported on XJ6 3.6 models, the valve block assembly can be replaced by a revised valve block, which is available as a separate item.

Installation Procedure:

CAUTION: Keep dirt from entering the transmission during this procedure.

FIGURE 1:

1. Remove the drain plug (Fig. 1) and drain the fluid.
2. Disconnect the dipstick tube union (Fig. 1) and drain the remaining fluid.

3. Remove the pan bolts and clamps. Lower the pan and drain off any remaining fluid. Discard the pan gasket.

4. Remove the filter screws. Remove the filter and discard the "O" ring.

5. Remove the thirteen mounting screws and carefully remove the valve body.

6. Using a lint free cloth, clean the transmission valve body, mating surface.
7. Install the replacement valve body while engaging the linkage. Do not tighten the screws.

NOTE: Three different length screws are used. Do not install the filter screws at this time.

CAUTION: Do not intermix the bolts.

FIGURE 2:

8. Place Service Tool JD 103 between the valve body and the case with the throttle valve pin on the step of the tool. Push the valve body forward and hold it against the tool while tightening the screws (Fig. 2). Torque the screws to 6 ft. lbs. (8 N-m).

9. Install the filter with a new "O" ring. Torque the screws to 6 ft.lbs. (8 N-m).

10. Clean and install the pan with a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 6 ft.lbs. (8 N-m). Install the drain plug.

11. Clean the union and reconnect the dipstick tube. Torque the union nut to 15 ft.lbs. (20 N-m).
ADJUSTING KICKDOWN CABLE

1. Verify the cable lug position: Hold the throttle bellcrank at the full throttle position (not kickdown, the kickdown detent can be felt as the bellcrank is moved). Measure the distance from the cable lug to the outer cable. A measurement of 39-40 mm should be achieved. If the measurement is outside this range, the lug has moved and cable replacement is required.
2. Adjust at idle position: Return the bellcrank to the idle position. Adjust the cable to achieve a gap of 0.030 in. +/- 0.020 in. between the lug and the outer cable.

3. Check at full throttle (KICKDOWN): Fully depress the accelerator pedal and hold in the kickdown position. Measure the distance between the lug and the outer cable. It should be a minimum of 44 mm. If the distance is less than 44 mm, check the throttle pedal stop adjustments.

CHECK FLUID LEVEL

Add approximately 3 quarts of Dexron 2D Automatic Transmission Fluid. Apply the handbrake and shift gear selector lever to the "P" position. Start engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Apply the brakes and shift gear selector lever through the entire range of gears. Shift to "P" position. Check the fluid level on the HOT side of the dipstick with the engine idling. Add fluid if necessary.

Road test vehicle to ensure normal operation.
