KEY POINTS: VEHICLE JUMP STARTING
Jaguar Cars recommend that in an emergency road side situation, it is acceptable for an attempt to be made to jump start the vehicle in accordance with the following procedure.

The vehicle should only be towed in the event that a jump start is not successful.

Emergency starting procedures are contained in the XJ-S Drivers Handbook, page 88, and the XJ6 3.6 Drivers Handbook on pages 102 and 103.

The following emergency jump starting procedure must be followed:

IMPORTANT: THE BOOSTER BATTERY OR EXTERNAL POWER SOURCE MUST NOT EXCEED 12 VOLTS.

1. Apply the hand brake and place the transmission in Park. Ensure the lights and other electrical loads are turned off.

2. Attach one end of one jump lead to the positive terminal of booster battery and the other end of the same cable to the positive terminal of the discharged vehicle battery. DO NOT ALLOW THE VEHICLES TO TOUCH EACH OTHER. This could establish a ground connection which may cause sparks and cause damage.

3. Attach one end of the remaining negative cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery and the other end to a ground point on the vehicle being started at least 12 in. from the discharged battery. (DO NOT CONNECT DIRECTLY TO THE NEGATIVE POST OF THE DISCHARGED BATTERY).

4. When started allow the engine to idle. Disconnect the booster battery in the reverse order to the connecting procedure.

Precautions

WARNING: Avoid contact with battery acid which is both poisonous and corrosive.

Never reverse the battery terminal connections and always disconnect both terminals before battery charging.

Fuel is extremely flammable. All fire precautions must be observed, when working on or near fuel devices of the vehicle. Do Not Cause Sparks.
