BATTERY OPERATION
SECTION: 86
No: 10
Model: XJ6 3.6 Date: DECEMBER, 1987
KEY POINTS: BATTERY CHECKS
To ensure proper battery operation, the following checks should be performed:

1. Ensure that the battery terminals are clean and tight and that the battery case is in good condition.

2. Ensure that the electrolyte level is 4-9 mm above the plates.

3. Check the alternator belt condition and adjustment (100 lbs. tension).

4. With the ignition and all circuits off, check the battery static voltage.

VOLTAGE INFORMATION:

12.5 Volts Or More: If the reading is 12.5 volts or more, the battery is satisfactory and no further testing is required.

Less Than 10.5 Volts: If the reading is less than 10.5 volts, replace the battery and check the electrical charging systems.

10.5 - 12.4 Volts: If the reading is between 10.5 and 12.4 volts, further testing is required. Check the electrical and charging systems and load test the battery.

The Battery Load Test Is As Follows:

1. Read the specific gravity of each cell. If it is less than 1.225 and/or there is a difference of more than 0.050 between cells, service and charge the battery as necessary.

2. Load battery to 300 amps for one second to remove the surface charge.

3. Load battery to 350 amps for 15 seconds and read voltage. If voltage is 9.6 volts or more, the battery is satisfactory.

NOTE: The minimum voltage will vary with the temperature of the battery:

TEMPERATURE MINIMUM VOLTAGE
70 F 9.6
60 F 9.5
50 F 9.4
40 F 9.3
30 F 9.1
20 F 8.9
10 F 8.7
0 F 8.5
