Engine - Hesitation Under Acceleration or Turns

87jaguar01

FUEL STARVATION
SECTION: 19
No: 2
Model: XJ6 3.6 Date: DECEMBER, 1987
KEY POINTS: ENGINE HESITATION UNDER HARD ACCELERATION OR WHEN DRIVING IN TURNS
Engine hesitation under hard acceleration or when driving in turns may be caused by the fuel return line (in the fuel tank) backing off the return elbow. This condition is particularly prevalent when the fuel tank is less than half full. To overcome the necessity to replace fuel tanks because of this problem, the following procedure has been developed. All production vehicles have been modified from VIN 519425.

The fuel return line reconnection procedure is as follows.

Reconnection Procedures:

CAUTION: Take all necessary safety precautions to prevent the possibility of explosion and fire.

1. Carefully remove the fuel level transmitter and gasket as follows:

A) Disconnect battery negative cable.

B) Remove ALL fuel from the fuel tank.

C) Remove the spare wheel, carpet, and insulation.

D) Note the position of the two wires connected to the transmitter and disconnect the wires.

E) Using Service Tool 18G 1001, remove the lock ring by turning counterclockwise.

F) Carefully remove the transmitter from the fuel tank and discard the gasket.

G) Using a pen light, look into the fuel tank and check the fitting of the return line. (The return line runs between the elbow and the swirl chamber).

NOTE: If the hose is disconnected at the swirl chamber, the fuel tank must be replaced. (Fuel tank Part No. CBC 5881/1).

2. If the hose is disconnected at the elbow only, continue the reconnection procedure:
A. Grip the loose end of the hose with a pick up tool and carefully bring the hose through the transmitter opening (Service Tool JD 114 can be used for this operation).

CAUTION: Do not pull the return line off the swirl chamber.

B. Place an 8-16 hose clamp on the end of the hose so that the clamp screw will be at the top when the hose is installed on the elbow. Tighten clamp just enough to hold it in place on the hose.

C. Using a petroleum lubricant, lubricate the hose and carefully feed it into the tank using Service Tool JD 114. Push the hose onto the elbow.

If necessary, use a large screwdriver to position the clamp. (The clamp should be positioned on the flat area of the elbow, in front of the elbow barbs.)

D. Tighten the clamp with a flex drive socket while holding the hose with Tool JD 114 (this will prevent elbow from rotating).

E. Reinstall fuel level transmitter.

NOTE: Check for fuel leaks after filling the fuel tank.
