Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

The crankshaft sensor is located on the front of the crankshaft. The sensor consists of a toothed gear and a sensor coil. As the toothed segment rotates, a signal is induced in the sensor coil and engine RPM is measured. The sensor signals are sent to the ECU for engine speed and crankshaft position.
