Trunk Light - Intermittent or Inoperative

88jaguar02

ELECTRICAL
SECTION: 86
No: 26
Model: XJ-S Date: APRIL, 1988
KEY POINTS: TRUNK LIGHT SWITCH
Due to a modification of the trunk lid inner panel, on vehicles between VIN range 148023 - 149183, intermittent or non-operation of the trunk interior light activating switch can occur, resulting in battery drain and a no-start condition.

To rectify this condition (commencing from VIN 149183), a trunk interior striker pad has been introduced on production. The striker pad is secured to the trunk lid inner panel with two self tapping screws.

Vehicle Identification:

1. Any XJ-S between VIN range 148023 - VIN 149183 require modification.

2. Because the modification was a running change, there are some affected vehicles outside this VIN range. A service check of new XJ-S vehicles should be performed, especially when battery failures have been reported. This modification should be used on earlier affected XJ-S Coupes.

Workshop Procedure:

1. Open trunk lid to allow access to the trunk lid inner panel.

2. Using calipers, lightly scribe an arc to dimension "A", 3.937", (100 mm), Fig.1, A.

3. Lightly scribe an arc to dimension "B", 3.375", (86 mm), Fig. 1, B.

4. Center punch the inner panel at the point where the arcs meet and drill on hole 0.093", (2.5 mm).

CAUTION: Drill hole through inner panel only.

5. Position striker pad and secure with one screw, (AC 606044), in the left side hole.

6. Hold striker pad in position against panel, and drill a second hole and secure with a second screw.
