VARTA BATTERY INSTALLATION

KEY POINTS: BATTERY FRAME MODIFICATION


ISSUE:

Installation of Varta Batteries as a service replacement into XJ-S vehicles VIN range 145729 - 174883.

ACTION:

FIG. 1:

Before installing a Varta battery JLM 10453, it is necessary to reposition the vent tube elbow to the negative terminal side of the battery. Also reposition tbe blanking plug from the negative to the positive side of the battery (Fig. 1).

FIG. 2:

The battery hold down frame (DAC 4727) must be modified to accept the Varta battery. Use the following procedure for frame modification:

^ Adjacent to the hold down bolt location, cut and remove a section of the horizontal surface of the frame, (Fig. 2 A). This will allow the frame to clear the battery cover vent housings on each side of the frame.


^ Position the frame on top of the battery. Mark the ends of the battery top cover between the terminal posts on the horizontal flange of the frame. Cut the horizontal flange of the frame (Fig. 2 B) and bend the flange upwards (Fig. 3 A).

FIG. 3:

^ Bend the lower edge of the four vertical flanges outwards 1/16 in. (Fig. 3 B).


WARRANTY INFORMATION:

Time Allowance: 0.20 hrs. (modify battery frame) This time is to be included with the time allowance for battery replacement. Do not claim as a separate fault.
