Keyless Entry: Description and Operation
Infra-red locking systemUsing the infra-red handset, it is possible to lock and unlock all four doors, the trunk, and the fuel filler flap. (The luggage compartment will remain locked if it was previously locked manually).
Locking Procedure:
^ Ensure that all doors, windows, sunroof, fuel filler flap, and trunk are closed.
FIGURE 1:
^ Standing approximately 3 feet from the vehicle, aim the handset through the lower part of the side window in a direct line with the receiver dome (located adjacent to the interior mirror). Press the handset button (Fig. 1) for approximately one second.
^ All door interior locking buttons should visibly move downwards to the locked position.
^ If the locks fail to operate, adjust the aim of the handset and depress the button.
NOTE: The infra-red signal cannot pass through solid objects or clothing. The signal will be obstructed by the roof pillars and interior mirrors. Carefully aiming of the handset is required for proper operation.
Unlocking Procedure:
^ The door unlocking procedure is the same as the locking procedure. The door interior locking button should visibly move upwards when the handset button is pressed.
Additional Notes:
^ If an interior door lock button is depressed with the respective door open, all door locks will be activated.
^ If one of the door locks falls out of sequence with the other locks, use the following procedure:
- Ensure that none of the door lock buttons are held up.
- Operate the handset twice; once to lock all doors and once to unlock.
Handset Maintenance:
^ There is an indicator light on the handset. When the batteries are low, the indicator will flash when the button is pressed. Also, the range of operation between the handset and receiver dome will decrease as the batteries discharge.
^ Handsets should be kept free from water, humidity, excessive shock or extreme hot or cold temperatures.
^ Handsets contain no serviceable parts except the battery cell.
^ If the handset becomes misplaced or disabled, the vehicle may be locked by using the door key.
Battery Replacement:
^ Carefully depress they spring tags through the openings in the case and remove the battery compartment cover from the handset body.
^ Remove the discharged battery cells.
^ Install three new battery cells, ensuring correct polarity is maintained.

^ Install handset battery cover onto the handset body (ensure spring tags click into position).
NOTE: To prevent complete battery discharge, batteries should be replaced (Fig. 2) at the 15,000 mile/12 month service interval. Use genuine Jaguar replacement batteries only, (JLM 1727).
Infra-Red Receiver Dome:

^ The infra-red receiver dome is retained in the interior light console by a spring clip and attached to a harness connector, (Fig. 3).
