3.6 and 4.0 sedan liter engines incorporate the "SPS" joint control system for nuts and bolts used in the following applications:
Crankshaft main bearing cap bolts Connecting rod end cap bolts and nuts Cylinder head hold down bolts
All of the above mentioned nuts and bolts should only be used once. They should be discarded after disassembly and replaced with new nuts and bolts upon reassembly.
Tightening Torque specifications (supersedes repair manual):
^ Crankshaft main bearing cap bolts - 136 to 142 N-m (100 to 105 ft.lbs.)
^ Connecting rod end cap bolts and nuts - 52 to 55 N-m (38.5 to 40.5 ft.lbs.)
^ Cylinder head hold down bolts - 59 to 61 N-m (43.5 to 45 ft.lbs.) plus exactly 90 degrees (+/- 0 degrees)
NOTE: Only the cylinder head "hold down" bolts should be tightened an additional 90 degrees, using tool LST 122.
The crankshaft main bearing bolts and connecting rod end cap bolts and nuts MUST NOT be tightened beyond the specification torque.
