Model: 89 MY XJ6 3.6 Date: SEPTEMBER, 1988
KEY POINTS: 1989 MODEL YEAR UPDATE
Beginning with the 1989 Model Year, the following changes have been made on production XJ6 3.6 vehicles:
.PASSIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEM:
The vehicle now incorporates an automatic passive restraint seat belt system. The passive belt system is a single diagonal seat belt fed from an inertia reel assembly. It is mounted on the inside seat slide and connected to a motorized runner mounted on the upper door opening. A quick release emergency buckle attaches at the runner. A second independent lap belt is fed from an inertia reel assembly mounted on the outside seat slide. It connects manually to the receptacle on the inside seat slide.
The tunnel section of the floor has been strengthened to accommodate revised seat belt mountings. The air conditioning case has also been altered to accommodate the revised tunnel area.
The under dash panels on both the right and left side have been reinforced via a metal plate, to serve as knee bolsters and reduce submarining.
NOTE: The reinforcement plate must be installed before the trim panel is installed. During PDI the right side reinforcement plate and trim panel must be installed after the CPU feed wire is connected.
.AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM:
The blower motor cases have been revised. The cases now incorporate recirculation/fresh air flap linkage changes. This revision changes the linkage angle, preventing linkage bind.
.HEADLIGHT WASHERS (VDP ONLY):
The high beam washer has been deleted. The power wash jets are now aimed at the low beam only.
.DOOR LOCKS:
An infra-red remote locking system is now incorporated which will lock all four doors, the trunk, and the fuel filler flap.
The front doors can now be locked with the doors open without holding the door handle (interior or exterior) in the open position.
Both trunk lock and unlock relays have been deleted. Activating the inertia switch no longer locks the trunk, but it will still lock the fuel filler flap and unlocks all doors.
.ACCESSORY FUSE BOX:
An accessory fuse box will soon be available as a dealer installed option. A PM 4 connector has been added to the left side harness in the trunk to supply power to this fuse box.
.INSTRUMENT PACK:
The operation of the Vehicle Condition Monitor (VCM) has been revised:
The "Fueling Failure" message has been changed. The message accompanying the exclamation symbol has been changed to 'Check Engine'. An amber border will be displayed around the symbol.
When two or more vehicle system failures occur simultaneously, the warning display for each fault will flash alternately every two seconds.
.CLOCK:
A liquid crystal display (LCD) clock replaces the previous vacuum florescent type. The clock is battery fed through the central microprocessor, and has daylight override.
.CHILD SAFETY LOCKS:
Child safety locks are provided on both rear doors. When these are "ON" the rear doors may be opened from the outside only, if the regular door lock plunger is up.
.CRUISE CONTROL:
The cruise control system has been revised to allow operation in three gear positions: D, 2, and 3.
The continuity unit replaces the previous relay to allow operation in any three gears.
When cruise control is activated in any of the three gears, normal system operation occurs. The system remains engaged when the gear selector is moved between D, 2, and 3.
.SEAT MOVEMENT:
Both the driver's and front, passenger's seats can be adjusted with the ignition'OFF'and the respective front door open. This operation is no longer limited to 2 minutes; adjustments may be performed as long as the door is open.
