Engine Pinging - 3.6 Liter High Compression Engines

MODEL: 88-89 MY Sedans DATE: 3/92

SUPERSEDES: TECHNICAL BULLETIN 12-28

ISSUE:

Fuel with an octane rating lower than 91 AKI (95 RON) can cause persistent or heavy engine pinging (detonation) under certain engine load and RPM conditions.

ACTION:

If a gasoline of 91 octane or better is being used and pinging is unacceptable, make sure that the engine setup is correct by checking for the following:

* Incorrect Engine Management System ECU.

^ Lean running (i.e. high lambda integrator voltage).

^ Incorrect spark plug specification.

^ Incorrect throttle potentiometer setting.

^ Overheating.

^ Blocked exhaust.

If all of the above is satisfactory and the pinging persists, check if the vehicle incorporates a 3.6 liter high compression engine.

NOTE:
The letter "A" in the fourth position of the of the engine number prefix indicates a high compression engine. High compression engines are incorporated on all vehicles from VIN 521298.

On a 3.6 liter high compression engine, install Ignition Timing Retard Kit (JLM 1825) using the following procedure:

^ Disconnect vehicle battery.

^ Remove distributor cap.

^ Cut and remove plastic strap securing the crankshaft sensor plug and disconnect plug.

^ Remove bolt securing sensor harness "P" clip to the front cover.

^ Loosen alternator and remove belt.

^ Remove crankshaft sensor bracket bolts and discard.

^ Remove sensor bracket assembly from front cover.

^ Remove sensor and dowels from bracket.

^ Install sensor and dowels to new bracket (EBC 3383).

^ Install sensor and bracket assembly to front cover and secure using new screw and bolt (included with kit).

^ Secure sensor harness "P" clip to front cover.

^ Connect crankshaft sensor plug and secure to cylinder head bracket with tie strap.

^ Install alternator belt and set tension to 115 lbs.

^ Install distributor cap and connect vehicle battery.

^ Discard fuel requirement label supplied with kit.

SERVICE ADVISOR NOTE:

Roadtest vehicle with customer to determine if the level of pinging is unacceptable.

Occasional light pinging while accelerating or when driving up hills is normal and no action should be taken.

Make sure customer is using a gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI (95 RON). A fuel with an octane rating higher than 91 AKI will further reduce pinging.
