Fuel Tank Breather System - Modified

KEY POINTS: FUEL TANK PURGE CONTROL
Commencing from VIN 538526, changes have been made in the design and specification of the fuel tank breather system and introduced on the above models to:

(a) Reduce pressurization of the fuel tank

(b) Avoid instances of rough running during slow speed maneuvering

Vehicles in service prior to the production VIN 538526 may be converted by installing an available Service Kit, (JLM 1576).

WORKSHOP PROCEDURE:

1. Open trunk, remove floor carpet, front and left-hand side trunk liners and spare tire.

2. Using pliers loosen the spring clip (Fig. 1, A) to disconnect the vapor pipe (Fig 1, B) from the hose.

3. Bend back the bracket securing the fuel tank plastic vapor pipe to the tank.

4. Remove the valve (Fig. 1, C) from the plastic vapor pipe. Remove the hose from the valve and place valve to one side.

5. Cut off the flared end of the plastic vapor pipe.

6. Connect the larger bored end of the hose, CAC 1853/5 (Fig. 1, D) to the fuel tank plastic vapor pipe. Secure with hose clip, C43594/6 (Fig. 1, E).

7. Position the plastic vapor pipe along the side of the fuel tank and secure with the retaining bracket.
8. Reinstall the underfloor vapor pipe to the other end of the hose and secure with spring clip, CAC 8772 (Fig. 1, F).

9. Reinstall the trunk liners and carpet.

10. Assemble the parts as shown (Fig. 2) using the existing 2 psi valve, CAC 3101 (Fig. 2, S).
11. Open hood, raise vehicle on a lift.

12. Turn the steering wheel to full left hand lock.

13. Remove both spoiler closing panels to gain access to the charcoal canister.

14. Remove the hose connecting the underfloor vapor pipe (coming from fuel tank) to the charcoal canister.

15. Connect the vacuum hose (Fig. 3, A) to the purge valve, (Fig. 3, B), and route with existing purge pipe (next to air pump).

16. Install the parts assembled in Step 10 between the vapor pipe and charcoal center stub pipe, (Fig. 3), secure with hose clamps supplied.

17. Drill a 10 mm diameter hole in the bottom spoiler closing panel. (Refer to Fig. 4 for drilling location.)
NOTE: Late VIN vehicles may have pre-drilled holes.

18. Reinstall the spoiler closing panels.

19. Lower vehicle.

20. Loosen the engine harness channel front tie strap, (Fig. 5, A), cut and remove the center ratchet strap (Fig. 5, B).

21. Route vacuum hose adjacent to fuel injection harness in the engine harness channel.
22. Secure the vacuum hose (routed in step 15) to the existing vacuum pipe, (adjacent to the air pump) using ratchet strap, (C4509).

23. Secure the vacuum hose to the injection harness channel with the existing tie strap (Fig. 5, A) and new ratchet strap, ADU 9028, (Fig. 5, B).

24. Disconnect the air conditioning vacuum feed elbow from the inlet manifold and disconnect the elbow from the black plastic pipe.

25. Connect the "T" piece, vacuum pipes, and hoses to the inlet manifold (Fig. 6). Cut a 1.5" section off the end of the new hose to connector "T" piece to black plastic pipe, (Fig. 6, A).
26. Loosen the clip securing the purge hose (located below the throttle valve housing) to the purge pipe and disconnect the hose from the pipe.

27. Install the restrictor, (Fig. 7, A) (CBC 6633), large end first in the bore of the hose.
28. Reconnect the hose to the pipe and tighten the securing clip.
