SUBJECT: XJ6 3.6 PRODUCT UPDATE #8
HIGH COMPRESSION ENGINES
A HIGH COMPRESSION ENGINE (9.6:1 COMPRESSION RATIO) HAS BEEN INTRODUCED FOR THE USA MARKET FROM ENGINE NUMBER 9D122724. THESE ENGINES HAVE BEEN PROGRESSIVELY INTRODUCED INTO PRODUCTION FROM VIN 521255 WITH 100% FITMENT FROM VIN 521298. THE ENGINE COMPRESSION RATIO CAN BE IDENTIFIED FROM THE ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER PREFIX, I.E.
9DPBLA100001 B = STANDARD 3.6 4V COMPRESSION RATIO 8.2:1
9DPANA100001 A = HIGH 3.6 4V COMPRESSION RATIO 9.6:1
THIS WILL REQUIRE "PREMIUM" GRADE UNLEADED FUEL, WHICH IS SO LABELED AT THE PUMPS, TO BE USED. THESE VEHICLES WILL FEATURE "PREMIUM UNLEADED FUEL" LABELS, FITTED BELOW THE FUEL INDICATOR ON THE INSTRUMENT PACK AND ADJACENT TO THE FUEL TANK FILLER CAP.
ENGINE MANAGEMENT
A REVISED IDLE SPEED CONTROL VALVE P/N EBC 1789 HAS REPLACED P/N EAC 6263 ON XJ6 3.6 FROM ENGINE NUMBER 9DP 117232. THIS NEW TYPE VALVE CAN ALSO BE IDENTIFIED BY THE SUFFIX "E" OF THE SUPPLIERS PART NUMBER REPLACING THE PREVIOUS SUFFIX "D" TYPE.
NEW, FUEL IGNITION ECU'S HAVE ALSO BEEN INTRODUCED:
FEDERAL (HIGH COMPRESSION) FROM VIN 521255, P/N DBC 3713 REPLACES DBC 2913
WHEN REPLACING THE EXISTING ECU WITH THE NEW TYPE, THE REPLACEMENT IDLE SPEED CONTROL VALVE MUST ALSO BE FITTED.
WHEN REPLACING THESE ITEMS, A FULL ENGINE MANAGEMENT SET-UP PROCEDURE MUST BE CARRIED OUT. ALL SETTINGS ARE UNCHANGED WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE BASE IDLE SPEED, WHICH IS CHANGED AND SET AT 570 TO 630 REV/MIN. TYPE.
AIR CONDITIONING
TO RECTIFY CASES OF CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS PERTAINING TO A "GROWLING" NOISE FROM THE XJ6 3.6 AIR CONDITIONING REFRIGERANT SYSTEM, IT IS POSSIBLE TO FIT AN AIR CONDITIONING MUFFLER TO THE LOW SIDE PRESSURE HOSE. CAUTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT AIR CONDITIONING HOSES ARE SECURED CLEAR OF THE ENGINE AND FREE OF KINKS.
IT IS KNOWN THAT THE EVERCO CO. A/C MUFFLER, PART NUMBER A8123, CAN BE FITTED FOR THIS RECTIFICATION. THIS PART CAN BE PURCHASED AT MOST RETAIL AUTOMOTIVE PARTS STORES.
IN THE NEAR FUTURE JCI WILL PUBLISH A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN DETAILING INSTALLATION PROCEDURES AND PARTS SUPPLY FOR SERVICE REPAIRS.
FUEL TANK/VENT SYSTEM
WE HAVE RECENTLY LEARNED THAT DURING THE ASSEMBLY PROCESS, CHARCOAL CANISTER VENT PLUGS WERE NOT REMOVED ON WHAT WE BELIEVE TO BE A LIMITED NUMBER OF XJ6 3.6 VEHICLES. BLANKING PLUGS ON THESE VEHICLES WERE INADVERTENTLY LEFT IN PLACE WHICH COULD, IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES, CAUSE THE FUEL TANK TO PARTIALLY COLLAPSE, RESULTING IN UNEVEN ENGINE POWER. WE ARE PRESENTLY ATTEMPTING TO IDENTIFY THE SPECIFIC VEHICLES IN WHICH THE CANISTER PLUGS WERE NOT REMOVED, AND WHEN WF HAVE DONE SO, WE WILL CONTACT THOSE DEALERS TO WHOM THESE VEHICLES HAVE BEEN SOLD TO SPECIFICALLY CHECK THE FUEL TANK VENTING SYSTEM ON THE VEHICLES AT P.D.I. OR THE 1,000 MILE SERVICE.
