Ball Joint -Lower


- Slacken off the road wheel nuts 1/4 turn each.
- Jack up the front of the vehicle and support with axle stands.
- Remove one wheel nut, mark the wheel relative to the stud, and remove the remaining wheel nuts.
- Remove the road wheel and tire assembly.
- Disconnect the left hand brake pad wear sensor block connector.



- Remove the lower guide pin bolt from the left hand caliper, and pivot the caliper (1) upwards to gain access to the pads (2).

NOTE Use an open-ended spanner to hold the guide pin during removal. This will prevent damage to the rubber dust cover.

- Remove the brake pads.
- Remove the upper guide pin bolt, remove the caliper, and re-position the caliber away from the suspension area.
- Remove the track rod end to steering arm securing nut.



- Fit service tool JD 100 (2) to the track rod end joint and break the taper.



- Remove the upper ball joint (2) securing bolts (1), not the position and collect the castor shims (3).
- Remove the lower ball joint securing nut, fit service tool JD 100 and break the taper.
- Remove stub axle assembly.



- Remove the lower ball joint to lower wishbone securing bolts (2), and remove the ball joint assembly.
- Clean the mating faces and shims.
- Fit new ball joint assembly.
- Fit and tighten the ball joint securing bolts.
- Refit the stub axle to the lower wishbone.
- Fit and tighten the lower ball joint securing nut.
- Fit the upper ball joint securing bolts, do not fully tighten at this stage.
- Refit the caster shims.
- Finally tighten the upper ball joint securing bolts.
- Reconnect the track rod end to the steering arm.
- Fit and tighten the securing nut.
- Refit the caliper to the carrier. Fit and tighten the upper securing bolt.
- Refit the brake pads to the carrier.
- Ensure that the caliper piston is fully retracted.
- Re-position the caliper over the pads and align the lower bolt hole.
- Fit and tighten the caliper lower securing bolt.



- Reconnect the pad wear sensor block connector.
- Refit the road wheel.
- Lower the vehicle from the stands.
- Carry out steering geometry check using suitable equipment.

- Camber angle 0 to 0.5°
- Castor angle 3.5 to 4.5°
- Wheel alignment Parallel to 1.6mm toe in (inclusive)
- Measurements to be taken with the underside of the front crossbeam 150.8 mm above the ground.

- Wheel nut to stud (steel wheel) 65-85 Nm
- Wheel nut to stud (alloy wheel) 88-102 Nm
